Well, no. Some Muslims believe so, especially those who advocate a compulsive, political form of Islam (but not solely they). Disturbingly, the folks who run the askMuslims blog at Boston Now believe the answer is yes. What's that say about the type of Islam they're proselytizing here in Boston? Miss Kelly points out that the blog is tied to Yusuf al-Qaradawi's Islam Online.
There seem to be a couple of points of confusion here:
1) The Boston site seems to be a local author reproducing lots of Religion Of Peace stuff from other people. (Obviously the person with the poor English responding in the comments isn't the author of any of those articles.) Claiming a connection to Yusuf al-Qaradawi because something published on one of his sites was linked seems a bit tenuous.
2) Everyone, including the askMuslims author, seems to be confusing the general concept of "hijab", which has been standard in pretty much the whole Muslim world since always, with the specific headgear associated with modern fundamentalists. Muslim women have always "had to" cover their heads in the sense that Jews "have to" abstain from pork.
Anyway, while the sort of "Jihad means a peaceful process of self-improvement!" stuff grates on me also, this particular person seems more deserving of some courteous correction and challenge than of Miss Kelly's Crusader-ish hysteria.
There are many Muslims who would argue that the Hijab or other head covering is a modern political invention, not required by Islam -- these are particularly the Muslims I'd like to see proffering their pov, not people who are clearly more in line with the Qaradhawi version which is what seems to be going on here...whether or not they're technically "dues paying members" of the Muslim Brotherhood. I agree, however, that it's not at all clear that the "author" is doing anything other than re-posting other people's stuff in full on a sloppily constructed "blog" where quoted material isn't indicated in any obvious way.
I don't think it's hysteria to point out that the "askMuslims" blog is written by someone who's clearly in the bag for the radical/political version of the faith.
Crusader Miss Kelly here. I think if you spend a little more time reviewing the Boston Now/Ask Muslim "blog," you'll understand why it bothers me so. The "author" writes nothing, he/she lifts dawah stuff from fundamentalist Islamic websites, including the "Ask Muslim" website. It's one ridiculous proseletyzing thing after another. There's nothing in any of the cribbed articles that has anything to do with Boston. Yet, every entry shows up in the Boston Bloggers Roundup, including what a great man Mohammed was, how terrible the Christians were in the middle ages, how Christians enslaved Africans (nothing about the Arab Muslim slave trade), and so forth. Somebody is exploiting Boston Now and is generating Islamic spam. It's wacky.
There's nothing tenuous about the connection to Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi. He started and owns Islam Online.net, and lots of "Ask Islam" material comes from there. The site is typical of Islamist Salafi/Wahabi thinking and ideology. It's bad news.
There is no ethical distinction between a Zionist and a Slaver.
By American history and precedent terrorism against Slavers and therefore also against Zionists is completely Justified. In fact the USA probably has an ethical obligation to raze the racist Jews only cities that murderous genocidal Zionist thieves and interlopers have criminally erected in Stolen and Occupied Palestine.
As for the hijab, it is a Jewish practice. It is fanatic Islamophobic bigotry to focus on Islam and the hijab while ignoring the incompatibility of Jewish and American values as described in a recent article in Jewish Week by Rosenblatt. (See http://eaazi.blogspot.com/2007/07/gary-rosenblatt-noah-feldman-american.html .)
From Jewish scripture (Sifrei Numbers 11.2).
Limed al benot yisrael shehen mekhasot rosheihen.
He taught to the daughters of Israel that they must cover their heads.
In point of fact, a hijab is not so far from head coverings favored by some Orthodox Jewish women.
What rock did you and your copy of the Protocls crawl out from under?
You make a bald assertion and present no evidence of Zionism = Slavery = right to commit acts of terror against Zion.
I'm not an expert, but the general requirement of Halacha is that women be modest, but that married women in particular were to conceal their hair when in public as it was deemed their "beauty".
The day I see little Jewish girls draped from head to mid-calf in black, with nothing but a slit to see where they are walking on a brutally hot summer day while their little brother walks along in a t-shirt, shorts and sandals, I'll accept that there's any relevance to your claim of Islamophobia. And, before I forget... ...that that little girl was also subjected to FGM.
and before you make any cracks about ritual circumsion of Jewish males, Muslims do the same, they just do it when they are much older and are likelier to suffer more pain and complications.
Hmmm Do women have to cover their heads (u sound as though ur'e asking) but u answered. the bad thing is ur answer is wrong. u just went to some website and without any basis claim that muslim women do not need to cover. hmmmm btw even jews and christians should cover their heads. please read the bible again.
Ultra orthodox married Jewish women are required by their community to cover their hair. The less orthodox but still very observant substitute a wig for the scarf. Some choose to wear a hairnet. It is rare to see a Jewish woman with her hair convered in any of these ways, except in chassidic neighbourhoods in Israel, or such as Outrement in Montreal. Whatver has been decreed in the Bible, has since been re-interpreted or discarded,by the overwhelming majority of Jewry, in the service of modernity, fitting the scriptural instructions to the realities, comforts and common sense of the world we live in. In other words, Judaism has kept up with the times, modernized and adapted itself, while it appears that Islam is stuck in seventh century customs and culture.
It is exactly that difference which makes Martillo's argument so bizarre. He wants to compare what is written in the Bible, 3 thousands year ago with what is being practiced by Muslims these very days. It points to an Islamic inability to READ scriptures as a text. Islamic clerics forbid reading. The faithful are requires to recite, mindlessly.
AS articulated so poignantly by Saudi TV Newscaster Buthayna Nasser:
"Yes sir, we are being brainwashed on a daily basis, through schools, through the Koran memorization schools. We always demand that these schools not be places of memorization, but for places for teaching, for interpretation, and for learning the keys to the Arab language, which is the secret to understanding the Koran and mysteries. Enough memorizing like parrots. Yes, we are all brainwashed, except for the few spared by God."
Further differences are legion. Even in orthodox circles, girls and unmarried women don't cover their hair.
And while this reflects more on the misogyny of Arab culture than Islam per se, there are the small matters of gender-Apartheid and honor killings. Nappy never heard of Jewish men killing their sister or daughter to save the family's honor.
Zionism = Slavery? That goes way, way beyond the UN's shameful Zionism = Racism resolution Ambassador Daniel Patrick Moynihan railed against, and long since rescinded by the UN thanks in part to the efforts of John Bolton before his appointment to the UN Ambassdorship. Nappy learned about Zionism when young but doesn't remember any lessons about slavery. Nappy's been to markets all over Israel bet never saw the slaves sold at market, something you can find in Sudan.
If Martillo weren't a moonbat and were genuinely concerned about slavery, instead of frothing at the mouth, he'd listen to first-hand accounts from freed slaves like Francis Bok and Simon Deng.
Sifrei Numbers/Sifre Shmot is extra-Biblical scripture from the Talmudic period.
Noga has not spent much time in an Orthodox Jewish community. Rote memorization is as much a part of traditional Jewish culture as it is among Muslims. In Mishnayos-memorization contests the younger yeshiva boys often demonstrate prodigious feats of memory.
Islamic cultures have been working on adaption to European modernism since the French revolution as government and juridical documents from Istanbul, Bursa and Jerusalem clearly indicate.
The Ottoman Empire was introducing modern citizenship and economic concepts well before they became accepted in Central and Eastern Europe.
Analysis of court records indicate that the Ottoman Empire was far more of a Rechtstaat in the late 19th century that Germany was in the 1920s and that an indigent plaintiff or defendant was more likely to receive a favorable outcome than he is to this day in the UK, Switzerland or Germany.
In Poland the Muslim community was part of the aristocracy and provided Poland with many of its leading intellectuals including Henryk Siekiewicz, who was Poland's first Nobel prize-winner for literature -- if I am not mistaken -- and who was -- I believe -- the most popular author in the New Yishuv during the 20s.
In general the Islamic encounter with modernity has been more profound and serious than any comparable efforts among Jews, who have for the most part abandoned traditional Judaism for a barbaric combination of ethnic narcissism, Holocaust obsession, and worship of the State of Israel.
Occasionally, we find an author-scholar like Isaac Breuer, who is a contemporary of Buber and Rosenzweig and who grapples with the same sorts of social-political and philosophical questions as Tariq Ramadan today. In contrast with Ramadan, who wants to engage and is fully capable of entering into a dialogue with non-Muslim Western intellectuals, Breuer was an insular intellectual, who only wrote for Jewish believers.
Jewish racists and fanatic Zionists work hard to defame Muslim modernists and modernizers because of fear that an Islamic-Western dialogue would lead to a realization that Jewish-Zionist fanaticism, genocidalism and subversion is the real threat to the USA, the West, the human race and the peaceful interaction and sharing of ideas bbetween the Muslim world and the West.

Of course, these pictures of Islamic enlightenment and liberal glory are evidenced all over the place. Just observe the lists of Nobel Prize winners to realize how accurately Martillo reproduces the progress and creativeness of Muslim scholars and other luminaries in the evolution of Western civiliztion.
