Did the IDF kill a "gunman" and a "civilian" in a Nablus shootout, as the New York Times originally wrote, or was it two gunmen?

The photo tends to lend credence to Israeli claims:

CAMERA investigates.

I can easily believe the guy was a gunman but "Furthermore, the slain man was a Hamas member, and therefore not a civilian. Anything less is a copout." is silly. Israel doesn't claim that unarmed Hamas members are military targets and IDF rules of engagement treat them as any other civilians.

Their post could have been a bit more careful. So, of course, could the NYT, who should know how ephemeral the concept of "civilian" can be in a place without uniforms and where hiding the evidence of someone being a legitimate target is as simple as grabbing their AK and tossing it out the window after they're down.
