This is just a wild guess from watching too much "Law and Order" and reading the news - most terrorist organizations in the US are making money doing standard mob-type stuff like cigarette smuggling. It sounds like this he may have owed a lot of money to (or somehow angered) some of his fellow NGO members and activists and they decided to make an example of him.

Probably one of the most interesting and kind teachers I've ever had. First of all he was a very dry and frank man. Making sarcastic jokes such as calling guys hippies if they had long hair or telling someone to stop smoking if they coughed. This asside personally my experience with him was that he cared about what he said. We talked about travel, food, people, and music in the time i had in his class which was supposed to be a boring typing class. He took us all on a field trip to the convinient store on the last day of school for fun and to chalange the rules a little bit. He was no terrorist, racist, or sexist. Just a man who was sending money and books to palestinian refugees, under alot of stress with a job in education and a heart for people.

Local police are saying it was suicide, as the bindings were done by him, but I'm guessing he wanted to make it look like a murder. So much so that the ACLU local chapter fired off emails telling "activists" that he was murdered before they knew all the facts. Wonder why?

There are several ways one can bind one's own hands, duct tape a fairly simple one, but they require advanced planning, and (if you know what to look for) there typically are certain signs.

Oddly enough, an episode of Law and Order just this week involved the death of a woman bound and gagged that turned out to be an accidental suicide. Thought of as a robbery/murder at first, at the very end one of the investigators looked at the bindings, and found that they were done by herself, rather than by someone facing her. As she had called her father before doing it, claiming she was bound in her trunk, it was a cry for attention that went wrong.

There's not enough public evidence except what's stated by the police to know whether it was a suicide or a murder, but if the former, I wonder if he may have gotten the idea from the show. Or if it's just one of those bizarre coincidences.

My daughter's friend had this guy as her keyboarding teacher at Small. She says he definitely had "issues" and would go off on his political views quite frequently. Is there a more pitiful sight than that man being turned away at that moment, and walking heartbroken down the incline of the street? Fuad Abu Ghali, rest in peace.

I have been in a primary school for girls, huddled in the back rooms with hundreds of little girls, age ten maximum, and their teachers, as Israeli tanks shot INTO the school.

I have visited the Ibrahimiyya School for girls where Riham Ward was writing on the blackboard when she was fatally hit by a huge shell, more than 12 inches long, from a tank parked outside the school. Why was a tank firing into a girls’ school classroom?

I have visited a number of students in hospital, shot by Israeli snipers on their way to school and university.

But, like Riad, I know this is only part of the story. I have Jewish and Israeli friends who work *against* the terror, and *for* the humans. I have seen Israeli soldiers put down their weapons and instead, shake hands with the kids who stopped throwing stones. I know that the soldiers are people first, and that many of them do not believe in what the military forces them to do. Remember the recent statistics for Israeli soldiers: more have died by their own hand, i.e., suicide, than have been killed. Read what the Refusers, those who refuse to serve in the Israeli military, say. They have been there. And they have changed direction, to go toward humanity, for the sake of their own selves as much as for others.

Look through the posts here and see where the hatred and fear-mongering are coming FROM. It is not from Riad’s friends. Thanks to all writers, for showing your colors. Look further, and you may find something even more true, even within yourself.

The dark-haired 22-year-old in black T-shirt, blue jeans and red Crocs is understandably hesitant as he sits at a picnic table in the incongruous setting of a beauty spot somewhere in Israel. We know his name and if we used it he would face a criminal investigation and a probable prison sentence for talking to us.

The birds are singing as he describes in detail some of what he did and saw others do as an enlisted soldier in Hebron. And they are certainly criminal: the incidents in which Palestinian vehicles are stopped for no good reason, the windows smashed and the occupants beaten up for talking back - for saying, for example, they are on the way to hospital; the theft of tobacco from a Palestinian shopkeeper who is then beaten "to a pulp" when he complains; the throwing of stun grenades through the windows of mosques as people prayed. And worse.

The young man left the army only at the end of last year, and his decision to speak is part of a concerted effort to expose the moral price paid by young Israeli conscripts in what is probably the most problematic posting there is in the occupied territories. Not least because Hebron is the only Palestinian city whose centre is directly controlled by the military, 24/7, to protect the notably hardline Jewish settlers there. He says firmly that he now regrets what repeatedly took place during his tour of duty.

I first met Riad Hamad several years ago, and while I haven't known him well have been honored to call him a friend. Riad was a school teacher in Austin, Texas, originally from Lebanon who dedicated his life to helping Palestinian children.

Recently, the FBI, pushed by Zionist zealots, raided Riad's home, confiscated everything he had, and threatened his oldest daughter, who had been accepted into medical school.

A few days ago Riad was found dead, reportedly drowned. I don't know whether he was driven to suicide or whether he was murdered; an investigation is underway. All I know for sure is that he was targeted for elimination by Israeli agents, that the world has lost a heroically compassionate man, that Palestinian children have lost yet another of those trying desperately to provide them help and protection, and that evil has again, for now, triumphed.

The principal at the school where Riad taught told reporters, ""Mr. Hamad is a loved teacher on this campus... Our children gained and developed a sense of humor. Some of the things the kids talked about, it was just remarkable that they could mirror the sense of humor that this man had. They love him. He has been remarkable in setting high standards and sharing. He has been a very generous, generous man."

News reports said that counselors would be on hand to help students cope with losing Riad.

Einstein once said that all it takes for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I admired Riad and his passion for life and his willingness to be out there in the front on the battle for justice. His spirit, his sense of humor, his biting off life in large chunks and devouring it without chewing was an inspiration to those of us tackling such an enormous battle; justice for the Palestinians in the face of overwhelming Zionist pressure.

I am honored to have known him, to call him my friend. There is a large hole in the world with his leaving it. There is no better way to say goodbye to a man who should be looked up to and emmulated than with Horatio’s farewell to Hamlet.

Your claim that Bin Laden's Islam is not the true Islam would have been convincing to Americans before 9/11. Your problem at this stage is that lots of us took the time to do some Quran reading following that attack, and what we found - especially those of us familiar with the Christian Bible - was not pleasing. I would encourage you to read the Christian New Testament - you will find a book that does not encourage the murder and mutilation of non-believers, but encourages people to 'love thy neighbor' regardless of his beliefs.

Violence seems to be intrinsic to Islam, through the Quran. Your claim that murderers like Bin Laden have a skewed vision of Islam - given the content of the Quran - is not convincing.

Tank Shell That Sprays Deadly Darts Killed Reuters Cameraman in Gaza, Say Doctors

GAZA - Bordered by lemon trees on one side and an olive grove on the other, the country lane leading to Joher Al Dik, where Fadel Shana was killed doing his job, was all but deserted yesterday afternoon. But two teenage boys from the Nusseirat refugee camp displayed half a dozen of the dull, black, inch-long darts which they said they had found among the cactus growing along the verge opposite where Mr Shana had parked his unarmoured SUV to film a tank on Wednesday afternoon. 0418 06

According to doctors who examined the body of the 23 -year-old Palestinian Reuters cameraman at Gaza City’s Shifa Hospital, it was controversial darts like those, flechettes, fired from an Israeli tank shell that explodes in the air, that caused his death. X-rays displayed to Reuters showed several of the flechettes embedded in the dead man’s chest and legs, and more were found in his flak jacket, clearly emblazoned, like his vehicle, with “TV” and “Press” signs.

The Israeli military was silent last night on whether it planned to launch the “swift, honest, and impartial investigation” into Mr Shana’s death, urged by David Shlesinger, the editor-in-chief of Reuters News, who said the medical evidence underlined the case for such an inquiry. Mr Shlesinger said: “The markings on Fadel Shana’s vehicle showed clearly and unambiguously that he was a professional journalist doing his duty. We and the military must work together urgently to understand why this tragedy took place and how similar incidents can be avoided in the future. This tragic incident shows the risks journalists take every day to report the news.”

The military would only say that all its weapons “are legal under international law”. Israel’s Supreme Court rejected a 2003 petition arguing that the use of flechettes as an anti-personnel weapon contravened a 1980 UN convention.

But the Israeli human rights group Btselem said last night that flechettes violated international law and demanded a criminal investigation.

Mr Shana’s friend and colleague Wissam Nassar, also 23, a photographer with the Maan news agency, said yesterday that, alerted to reports of civilian casualties in central Gaza, he and two colleagues had driven south in the armoured car of photographer Mohammed Abed, of Agence France Presse.

“We parked the car at the corner [of the lane] and saw people looking east. We saw Wafa Abu Mizyed [who was injured by shrapnel in the blast] and he was saying ‘Fadel died’.” Mr Nassar added that before they managed to get to Mr Shana’s car there was an explosion perhaps 30 metres away from what he presumed was another tank shell, which had landed ahead of them to the east of the car.

“We all lay down in the road,” he said. “I thought at first I had been injured. There was a lot of smoke.” Eventually they reached Mr Shana’s car and found his body beside his mangled tripod.

Riad Elsolh Hamad Longtime peace activist, beloved father, partner, soul mate, and educator

Riad Elsolh Hamad died tragically on April 14, 2008. Riad was born on September 20, 1952 in Beirut, Lebanon, but called Austin home since 1970.

A lifelong scholar, Riad received the first of many degrees from the University of Texas, Austin. At the time of his death, he was pursuing a PhD in Educational Technology. Riad touched many lives as an educator and friend. He was a computer technology instructor at Clint Small Middle School. He was a selfless individual who focused on helping students realize their potential.

He was also a champion of human rights and worked tirelessly for peace and justice. He founded the Palestinian Children's Welfare Fund to aid Palestinian children, women, and families in need. Riad is survived by his loving partner, Diana; his daughter; his son; his brother; and other siblings and family across the world. He leaves behind countless friends who will miss him dearly and a legacy of love and peace.

This whole affair really is beginning to sound like the whole "Your Black Muslim Bakery" scandal.

It's interesting to note that when I suggested that Hamad could have been killed by fellow activists, his fellow activists jumped in and insisted that it was a suicide.

However, when most readers (and the police) agreed that it could have been a suicide, Hamad's fellow activists returned to their original story, claiming that it could have been murder (and of course, trying to implicate everyone but themselves)

Remember the first rules of a whodunnit - suspect family first, then suspect friends and co-workers. From the orchestrated chorus of accusations coming from these 'activist' groups, the changes in story and the obvious plans made, (and including the long list of suspicious activities committed by these groups) I'd guess the police will find some interesting things. The Blind Sheik Rachman expressed anger over political problems in EGYPT with dictator Hosni Mubarak. He also blamed the US for supporting Mubarak. However, Rachman, though convicted of conspiracy did NOT formulate the PLAN to blow shit up. People assume he did, but the COURT does not.

In court cases, there are FACTS and JUDGMENTS.
In the 1993 bombing, the court did not deny, and in fact confirmed ALL these facts:

The bombing was planned and orchestrated by an Egyptian Intelligence Agent, Emad Ali Salem, who testified in the trial.

Emad Salem was obviously someone who had worked for Mubarak.

Another Egyptian asset was involved in the 1993 bombing, named Ali Mohamed. The court does not dispute this. Mohamed became a US Army officer, and remained deeply associated with Al-Qaeda, despite the fact that his first political act was murdering Anwar Sadat, and much more terrorism. Part of the story is on the State Dept website, but I also have it on mine.

Salem came up with the entire bombing plan, WHILE ON PAYROLL of the FBI. This fact is not the least disputed, neither by the prosecutor nor the judge.

Salem also recruited the bombers from the mosque and he trained them to do the bombing. They were so smart, one of them went back for the refund.

The FBI also supplied the "safe house" for plans and operations, and this is NOT disputed by the court.

The FBI also supplied the bomb components to Salem, and this is NOT disputed by the court.

The FBI also supplied the explosives, and this is NOT disputed by the court. As a matter of fact, the court does not dispute that the plan was to use dummy explosives, but it was the FBI that insisted on the live explosives that killed all the people.

They cannot dispute that, because Salem was upset and scared, and thus wore his wire while speaking to the FBI, and recorded them confirming that fact. Another female FBI agend also confirmed that.

Nor is it disputed that the truck rental was manned by the FBI, they knew it was going down.

The Judge, Michael Mukasey, even said it was a GOOD THING THAT THE FBI SUPPLIED THE BOMB, think about how worse it could have been if the terrorists supplied the bomb. Of course this is a non-sequitor statement that ignores the fact that the bombers themselves and the big conspiracy-plan only existed in the imaginations of the FBI, until they actively created the whole thing.

So the FACTS are clear, but the JUDGMENT is that the FBI was slightly overzealous in their sting operation, in which they orchestrated the entire thing from top to bottom.

Global geo-politics, weapons makers in Europe and the US, financial flows, new Military Doctrine preceding 9-11, BCCI and earlier Nugan-Hand Bank with ties to Al-Qaeda AND to Ollie North and the CIA, heavy historical collaboration with Al-Qaeda forces in Europe and the Middle East, plus nuclear chicken with China and Russia.

Heck, Seymour Hersh even lightly documents that now, in the New Yorker. The Redirection. Bush arming and funding Al-Qaeda forces. OF COURSE, because Al-Qaeda is our FRIEND. Just ask Bush. The enemy of our enemy, etc.

Of course Bush is not only funding and arming radical Sunni groups, he's also funding radical Shia groups in Iraq.

It's seriously unlikely that "the Jews" killed Riad Hamad, because most Jews were probably at home, watching Seinfeld reruns and eating dinner like most Americans, or maybe praying to God, like most Americans. (Including Muslims, who also pray to the same "One True God".)
