They have one. Good page to keep an eye on if you want to see (and distribute) the latest videos. Like this one, of a strike on a mosque stockpiled with missiles and showing a massive secondary explosion:

Amazing report with video from Pamela in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Hamas has a large infrastructure of supporters here in America, and they are growing: FLORIDASTAN: ISLAMIC ANTI JEW, PRO-HAMAS RALLY - THE HATRED OF THE GOOD. A preview of Eurabia in America.

I see Lt. Col. Allen West on the side of the good guys, and is that CJUI's May Long showing the colors in the final pic?

Thanks to Hillel Stavis for the following photos and video from what looks to have been a very successful rally/counter-protest.

First, from Andy W., one of the participants:

Score one for the good guys.

Just back from a very solid showing of 150 - 200 hearty souls braving the cold and standing strong for Israel before the consulate with Israel and American flags. "Hey Hey Ho Ho Hamas Has Go To Go", "No Terror. No Hamas" and "Stop Your Terror. Stop Your Bombs. There'll Be Peace When Hamas Is Gone" rang out from our crowd across the street to the 100 anti-Israel protesters. Not a lot of car traffic but many passing by were supportive of the good guys. I heard Fox News was out as well.

We concluded with Am Yisrael Chai, HaTikva, a wonderful American Star Spangled Banner (causing even more distress among our foes), and Oseh Shalom Bimromav. Just great ruach. And after 1.5 hours it was the other side exited stage left. They started this protest - We finished it. Hamas started this war - and the IDF will finish it (with more care than any other military in the world to prevent civilian losses)

Hats off to Ari and Nancy of JCRC for their hard work and official call to action. As well as other groups and activist making this a success -- Charles Jacobs early efforts, Rabbi Rodkin of Shaloh with some great signs, the "Goats" activists. I also saw Barry Shrage and the CJP email. I know David Project and CAMERA supporters were out as well. Of course y'shar koach to our locals that trekked in. And Boston's finest gets a nod for good ref-ing.

Very important to keep challenging the other side. It is still "Hammer Time" and I like the score since last night: Maccabees 2 : Plishtim 0

First, video of the Pro-Hamas side. Isn't it a little difficult to claim it's all about the "occupation" when you're chanting "From the river to the sea..."? I call this one, Legend of the Circling Moonbat:

Here's a link to the YouTube version.

Here's a series of clips of the good guys!:

The Ahava shop?:

A gunman wounded two Israelis working at a packed central Denmark shopping mall Wednesday, Danish police said.

The two wounded men are Israelis in their 20s, police spokesman Lars Thede said. He said it was too early to speculate on whether they were targeted because of their nationality.

One of the wounded was shot in the arm and the other in the leg, police said. Their condition is unclear.

The shooting took place at the Rosengaard mall in Odense, 170 kilometers (105 miles) west of Copenhagen. It occurred around 3:30 p.m. (14:30 GMT), when the mall was filled with people doing last-minute shopping before the New Year's break.

Thede said a video surveillance camera showed a man in his mid-20s pulling out a gun before opening fire...

Omri points out that...

...we're talking about a country where "Jews are Allah's enemies" is a popular protest chant...

He has the video.

Michael Totten asks: What Would a Proportionate Response Look Like?

Now that Hamas's long war against Israel is matched with a short war in Gaza, protests are erupting everywhere from the blogosphere and Arab capitals to the United Nations, and they began on the very first day. Salon.com "blogger Glenn Greenwald calls the Israeli retaliation to more than a year of rocket attacks a "massively disproportionate response." UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay "strongly condemned Israel's disproportionate use of force." The Israeli counterattack is, indeed, disproportionate, but it could hardly be otherwise. "At last count," J.G. Thayer wrote, "one Israeli and two Palestinians (sisters, ages 13 and 5) died from rocket attacks. So a proportionate response, one presumes, would have required Israel to kill a single Palestinian and two of its own citizens."..

...The "disproportionate response" crowd doesn't seem to mind that Israel struck back at Hamas per se. They aren't saying Israel should only be allowed to negotiate with its enemies or that any use of force whatsoever is wrong. They're clearly saying Israel should use less force, inflict less damage, or both.

One problem here is that it's not at all clear how they think Israelis should go about doing it. The weapons used by each side can't be the same. No one has ever said Israel ought to put its superior weapons systems in cold storage until Hamas can develop or purchase something similar. Presumably Israel is allowed to use its superior technology as long as the casualty count on each side is proportionate.

But how would that work in practice? A single Israeli air strike is going to kill at least as many people as Hamas can kill in twelve months. Does that mean Israel should be given a "license" of one air strike per year to use in the war?...

The "proportionate response" crowd appears to be motivated by the pacifist faith, which considers it a moral victory to eliminate all violence, including self defense. Since these pacifists have no hope of eliminating terrorist violence, they focus their efforts on anyone who is unfortunate and soft-hearted enough to listen to their babble. Israel is one of those unfortunates.

The pacifist "proportionate response" ideal has helped terrorist violence increase worldwide. "Proportionate response" laws prohibiting self-defense have also been responsible for the recent crime wave in Britain.

Here are the basic rules for self-defense in Britain, via Uncommon Misconceptions:

You are permitted to protect yourself with a briefcase, a handbag, or keys. You should shout "Call the Police" rather than "Help." Bystanders are not to help. They have been taught to leave such matters to the professionals. If you manage to knock your attacker down, you must not hit him again or you risk being charged with assault...

...How did it come to this? How were the British lulled into giving up what Americans regard as an essential right? The Cato Institute identifies these steps in the process:

* 1920: Law introduced requiring certification every 3 years of necessity of owning a gun
* 1937: "Necessity" redefined to discourage home or personal protection
* 1953: Prevention of Crime Act passed - outlaws carrying any article for an "offensive purpose."
* 1964: "Necessity" redefined to exclude home or personal protection
* 1967: Criminal law revised to allow only "reasonable" force in self-defense. Protection of property is considered unreasonable.

British laws against self defense are based on the UN's "human rights" legislation. Like the British people, the Israelis have slowly gotten accustomed to living with UN laws forbidding self-defense, a basic right that every being, even the lowliest amoeba, requires for its existence. Because of this, UN pacifist laws are, in reality and practice, a severe violation of human rights.

Forbidding "violence" in the form of self-defense appears to have become the primary goal of the United Nations. As promoters of the pacifist faith, the UN should be reclassified as a religious organization, not a political one.

We all know that faith and politics should not mix. The faithful of the UN only have power over those who are unfortunate enough to listen to them. If Israel or any other nation values its existence, they should not listen.

Salah Soltan (also spelled Sultan -- Jew-hater extraordinaire and sometime guest of the Islamic Society of Boston...see here for a search, here for the original "who is".) is back in video, along with a star-studded cast of like-minded individuals as MEMRI trolls the airwaves as Egyptian television personalities go bat-shit with raw anti-Semitism as their pals in Hamas get the IDF's big toe up their rectum. Click the picture below to go to the video, though MEMRI now requires registration.

memrisalahsoltan.jpg

Here's the transcript, and MEMRI's very long title: As Gaza Fighting Continues, Egyptian Clerics Intensify Antisemitic Statements; Columbus, Ohio Muslim Scholar/Leader Dr. Salah Sultan: Muhammad Said That Judgment Day Will Not Come Until Muslims Fight the Jews and Kill Them; America Will Suffer Destruction

Check it out (too much to excerpt). Trust me, these guys are a treat. OK, here are a couple of extracts:

Egyptian cleric Sheikh Muhammad Al-Saghir: "I say to the people of Gaza: Take my heart, which has hardened like a stone. Take it, and use it to stone all the Jews..."

Egyptian cleric Sheikh Muhammad Mustafa: "Where is the [Islamic] nation? If 20 million people can encircle the Earth, then 20 million people could also drown Israel in a sea of blood."

Egyptian cleric Sheikh Muhammad Hassan:...They are blood-suckers. They are shedders of blood. Review the history of the Jews from beginning to end, from the very first moment to the last moment, which is now. They specialize in the shedding of blood, in crime, and in killing - even the killing of prophets...

Egyptian cleric Sheikh Amin Al-Ansari: "It is told that the Israelites killed more than 70,000 prophets in a single day. It's not the people they want to eradicate, but Revelation itself. They do not want there to be any revelation, purity, religion, or religious law. The secret behind the war between the Jews and non-Jews is that they want to have a monopoly on the spiritual and ideological leadership of the world, and eventually, the physical leadership.

Egyptian cleric Dr. Sallah Sultan: The stone which is thrown at the Jews hates these Jews, these Zionists, because Allah foretold, via His Prophet Muhammad, that Judgment Day will not come before the Jew and the Muslim fight. The Jew will hide behind stones and trees, and the stone and the tree will speak, saying: 'Oh Muslim, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.' The only exception will be the Gharqad tree...

Related: Patrick Poole has the story of the technology lab at the Hamas-run Islamic University of Gaza which Israel took out. The lab was funded...from Ohio: Israel Targets Terror Labs Funded by U.S. Islamic Group. Soltan is also from Ohio, and Poole did much of the footwork in the likely rejection of Soltan's citizenship bid.

That's New England Cable News, a fairly important regional news outlet. Miss Kelly caught them out editing some video to play up the "violence is bad...m'kay?"-angle, rather than the "who's to blame"-angle. And thus they go for the drama and fail in their mission to help us understand.

Here's the original video, courtesy of Palestinian Media Watch. Can you tell what they might have clipped?

And here's Miss Kelly's post for the answer: NECN Skewed Coverage of Israel/Gaza

The original video is from Fatah controlled TV, btw, so you can see that his is a slightly different sort of fight. The cracks are showing.

Very interesting piece on Spanish antisemitism and its roots at PJM today: Spain's 'Jewish Problem'. Well worth reading in full, but here's a snip:

...According to a recent study published by the Pew Research Center, nearly half of all Spaniards have negative views of Jews, a statistic that marks Spain as one of the most anti-Semitic countries in Europe. According to Pew, 46 percent of Spaniards hold negative opinions of Jews, up more than double from the 21 percent of Spaniards with such views in 2005.

Spain is also the only country in Europe where negative views of Jews outweigh positive views; only 37 percent of Spaniards think favorably about Jews. By comparison, 36 percent of Poles have negative views of Jews while 50 percent have positive views; in Germany, 25 percent negative versus 64 percent positive; in France, 20 percent negative versus 79 percent positive; and in Britain, 9 percent positive versus 73 percent favorable. (According to Pew, 77 percent of Americans have favorable views toward Jews, compared with 7 percent unfavorable.)

Pew's latest research about Spanish anti-Semitism corroborates the findings of other, similar surveys. For example, a report about European anti-Semitism published by the New York-based Anti-Defamation League says that 54 percent of Spaniards believe that "Jews have too much power in international markets." And 51 percent of Spaniards believe that "Jews are more loyal to Israel than to this country."...

Good little piece by Bret Stephens: Hamas Knows One Big Thing

...Hamas knows one big thing, which it labels "resistance" or, for Western audiences, "ending the occupation." Just what that means was made clear by Palestinian cleric Muhsen Abu 'Ita in a televised interview. "The annihilation of the Jews here in Palestine," he said, "is one of the most splendid blessings for Palestine."

This kind of genocidal incitement is more than idle ranting: Gigantic ambitions sustain political movements through hard times. Hamas is also sustained by the insight that Israel's considerable military capabilities are unlikely to be matched by political will. It believes that whatever attacks come will be tempered by a host of humanitarian and diplomatic considerations. It believes that Israel wants to avoid a public relations debacle (so Hamas will do everything it can to engineer or fabricate one). It believes that the weight of international sympathy will be on its side. It believes, too, that the last thing Israel wants is to reoccupy Gaza, with all the costs and complications that entails.

Hamas believes, in short, that while Israel will do many things, and do them well, it will not do the main thing. And that, in turn, means that as Israel exhausts its target list, as eventually it will, the storm will pass. Then the green flag of the movement will fly defiantly over the tallest building left standing, its prestige hugely boosted -- and Israel's commensurately diminished -- throughout the Muslim world.

Does all this also mean that Israel's attacks amount to a fool's errand? Outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Olmert likes to point out that no Hezbollah rockets have fallen on Israeli soil since August 2006 -- never mind that Hezbollah is both politically and militarily more powerful today than it was before the war. A similar outcome in Gaza would be equally disastrous.

This is not a counsel of restraint, of which Israel has shown more than enough through years of provocation. It is merely to point out that no ingenious conceit can disguise the fact that war offers no outcome other than victory or defeat. This is one big thing that Hamas understands, and that Israel must as well. The fox cannot beat the hedgehog. But the bigger hedgehog can -- and in this case must -- defeat the smaller one.

The Free Gaza fools (including Cynthia McKinney) finally got turned back on their way to the next photo op. Sounds like they may have dented their boat: Drama on High Seas: Navy Stops Pro-Arab Boat

The Navy stopped pro-Arab activists around midnight Monday from reaching Gaza by stopping their "Free Gaza" vessel for the first time after several previous landings in Gaza. Activists claim the Navy rammed their boat, and they charged Israel with "piracy on the high seas."

The movement's spokeswoman Greta Berlin told Israel National News that the incident occurred approximately 50-60 miles off the Gaza coast, in international waters. Any vessel can be legally required to identify itself in order to prevent it from entering prohibited territory although its passengers cannot be arrested in international waters, explained Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor.

The Free Gaza boat, dubbed the Dignity, collided with a Navy boat, but Berlin said the activists on board have pictures to prove it was rammed, an allegation that Palmor said is ridiculous. "If we wanted to hit it intentionally, everyone would have drowned," he told Israel National News.

Ministry spokesman Yossi Levy was quoted by a CNN correspondent on board the 60-foot vessel as saying that the collision occurred when a Navy boat tried to turn around. Free Gaza claimed that at least half a dozen Navy boats surrounded the Dignity...

ANSWER and friends will be holding a pro-Hamas rally tomorrow in front of the Israeli Consulate at 20 Park Plaza in Boston.

The organized pro-Israel community will not allow them to have the floor unresponded to. This just in from the JCRC:

Please join the Jewish community at 5:00PM tomorrow, December 30th, in a peaceful counter-protest against groups who do not support Israel's action in Gaza and will be demonstrating at the Israeli consulate at 20 Park Plaza.

BTW, look who's also going to be there (SUPPORTING Hamas). Our friends at the Muslim American Society, the people running Menino's mega-mosque.

A good pundit or blogger doesn't know the word. They just forge ahead and tell you what they think you should believe whether they really know what the hell they're talking about or not. I'm usually a bit more cautious. Jeff Jacoby both hits the nail on the head and makes a larger point (the issue of being wrong isn't really his point here, at least not his main point: Don't believe everything you read.

Of course, I beat Jeff because I knew that Bush wouldn't get any "credit" for the surge. THing is, sometimes it doesn't matter. Credit or not, the mission is the goal if you believe in it, good press be damned.

...says Damian Thompson at the Telegraph (h/t: el Flea). And indeed, Britain's big problem isn't just the hordes of unknown Jihadis, it's the organized groups, operating in the open, like MPACUK:

The Muslim Public Affairs Commitee (MPACUK) is appealing to its supporters to track down the Muslim researchers who worked with the think tank Policy Exchange on a project to expose the sale of hate literature in British mosques.

Under the heading "The Hunt for 8 Sufi Zio-Con Frauds", the MPAC website claims that the researchers were members of "Sufi underground cults" who teamed up with the Zionists to discredit Islam...

'Hey, you kids, lay down on that stretcher...good...take picture now!"

Richard Landes has a taste of the flood of staged PR photos courtesy of Hamas yet to come: WaPo steps in Pallywood Doodoo? Something Smells

Via YNet News: Hamas threatens Israeli leaders

Hamas figure in the northern Gaza Strip Fathi Hamad said his organization would hurt Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

"We will reach that Zionist in her house, inside the Knesset compound. We will also get to the traitors in the Muqata compound in Ramallah and to all those in the Arab world that had a hand in the scheme against us. We will hunt Barak down and reach all of them," Hamad said.

"Today we are sending a message through the sea of blood that was spilled here and we will not surrender and we will defeat the enemy. From here, from within the proud Strip, we say to all our enemies: We will get to you, defeat you, and hunt you down one by one.

"We will reach the Zionist leaders in their homes, we will get to you, the collaborators in the Muqata in Ramallah, and we will settle the score with you one by one."

Hamad added that "Hamas and the organizations will settle the score with anyone who was involved in the attack on Gaza, in the participation in this scheme and in supporting this attack.

"We will settle the score with you one by one"? Why has anyone ever taken these goons seriously? One commenter had it right when he said that these Islamist 'leaders' make Robert Mugabe look like a respectable statesman.

Hamas' gangsta-style threats were a reaction to Israels' recent, precisely targeted airstrikes against the organization. Hopefully, these airstrikes (and Hamas' blundering reaction) are a sign that things are changing in the Middle East.

Hamas' gangsta militia is just one weapon in Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Syria's long-running war against Israel. Other weapons include the Pallywood propaganda machine, the petrodollar lobby and their militias, like al Qaeda, Hezbollah and Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah.

As Mark Steyn said, the strength of the Arab armies combined make Belgium look butch. For decades the Arab/Islamists have been trying to compensate for their embarrassingly small armies by using every meager resource they have. All they have to show for this is a reasonably efficient propaganda machine, mobster governments and some of the most backwards social systems and economies in the world.

All Israel has to show for their pursuit of peace is a bad neighborhood filled with propagandists, mobsters and power-hungry zealots. It's about time things changed.

For years, Israel has following the British model of dealing with terrorism - legitimizing the sonuvabitch who is "our friend" and trying to pit him against the sonuvabitch who is "our enemy". They've been trying to negotiate with the supposedly moderate Abbas and the supposedly moderate Saudis in the hopes that these enemies of Hamas and Iran (respectively) will offer a working peace.

When Israel realizes that Abbas and Saudi Arabia are just as dangerous as Hamas and Iran, when Israel realizes that these enemies have been working together for years and that they give their war against Israel a higher priority than their war against each other, they can finally abandon the British model and take effective action against the enemies who hope to eliminate them. Hopefully, these targeted attacks against Hamas are a sign that Israel is changing course.

If Israel has given up all hope that the British model will work, we'll all benefit, because we all need to abandon this failed model.

The war against terror-supporting nations is bigger than Israel vs. the Palestinians. It's India vs. Pakistan, its the Taliban/Pakistan vs. Afghanistan, it's Iran/Hezbollah vs. Lebanon. It's America vs. al Qaeda, it's Europe vs. Hizb-ut-Tahrir and the Muslim brotherhood and it's Thailand vs. Islamist 'separatist militants'. These wars follow the same pattern as Israel vs. the Palestinians - an established state is threatened by a weak, petrodollar-funded Islamist militia that has few real weapons, no real offensive capability and few soldiers who can shoot straight. The established state ignores the fact that it could easily wipe out the Islamist threat using decent intelligence work and the destruction of enemy infrastructure. It tries diplomacy and dumb alliances with 'moderate' Islamists and enemies-of-enemies. This prolongs conflicts that should have been finished years ago.

We need to stop prolonging these conflicts, for Israel and for ourselves.

Courtesy of Richard Landes, here is video showing an Israeli Air Force missile strike against an underground Gaza missile launcher. The missile, already prepped for launch, misfires.

I'm trying to find out if it's the same as this incident.

I guess that answers the question as to whether the hostages were tortured or not: Mumbai Mirror:Terrorists sexually Humiliated guests before killing them

Disturbing photographs made available to this newspapers by police sources indicate that several of the guests at the Taj Mahal Hotel during the siege November 26 were sexually humiliated by the terrorists and then shot dead.

Police sources confirm that even as the terrorists were engaged in a fierce combat with NSG commandos, they were humiliating their hostages before ending their terrifying ordeal.

Foreign guests were their particular target. Eight of the 31 killed at the Taj were foreign nationals.

Photographs taken by a police forensic team after the hotel was sanitised yield a gruesome picture of some of the guests in the nude.

These bodies were found away from the hotel's swimming pool which makes it clear that they were not those guests who were taken hostage from the poolside.

"Even the Rabbi and his wife at Nariman House were sexually assaulted and their genitalia mutilated," said a senior officer of the investigating team, not wishing to be quoted.

"We have CCTV footage which reveals how these terrorists forced some of the guests who were holed up in restuarants to strip, but there is not evidence of rape," he added.

These pictures, most of which we have refrained from printing, are in the records of the police and are now part of the investigation.

There is one photo at the original article. [Via: Jihad Watch]

'All police HQs in Gaza destroyed'

Olmert: Our desire for quiet was met with terror

What they're reacting to (note the urban setting):

IMG_9341.JPG

Photo from the Israeli MFA, as is the following:

Israeli citizens have been under the threat of daily attack from Gaza for years.

Only this week - hundreds of missiles and mortars shells were fired at Israeli civilian communities including the firing of 80 missiles on a single day.

Until now we have shown restraint. But today there is no other option than a military operation.

We need to protect our citizens from attack through a military response against the terror infrastructure in Gaza.

This is the translation of our basic right to self sefense.

Israel left Gaza in order to create an opportunity for peace.

In return, the Hamas terror organization took control of Gaza and is using its citizens as cover while it deliberately targets Israeli communities and denies any chance for peace.

We have tried everything to reach calm without using force. We agreed to a truce through Egypt that was violated by Hamas, which continued to target Israel, hold Gilad Shalit and build up its arms.

Israel continues to act to prevent humanitarian crisis and to minimize harm to Palestinian civilians.

Unfortunately, Hamas cynically abuses its own civilian population and their suffering for propaganda purposes. The responsibility for harm to civilians lies with Hamas.

Hamas is a terrorist organization, supported by Iran, that does not represent the legitimate national interests of the Palestinian people but a radical Islamist agenda that seeks to deny peace for the peoples of this region.

While confronting Hamas, Israel continues to believe in the two State solution and remains committed to negotiations with the legitimate Palestinian Authority in the context of the peace process, launched at Annapolis.

Israel expects the support and understanding of the international community, as it confronts terror, and advances the interest of all those who wish the forces of peace and co existence to determine the agenda of this region.

Now that Obama has been elected, those who brought home the bacon will be handing out the spoils. Change we can believe in! JR Telegraph takes note of one such local notable with a handle on the Obama patronage firehose: Santa Claus is Jewish, And His Real Name Is... With holiday-appropriate colors!

..."I have a list that's bigger than Santa Claus, and I know exactly who's been naughty and nice," joked Alan Solomont, a political power broker who was a big Bay State fund-raiser for Obama...

Columnist Tom Mountain has used my posting on the confusion by Combined Jewish Philanthropies and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston (CJP/JCRC) between Judaism and leftist politics (Analysis: 37 Percent of Boston JCRC Action Alerts Have Nothing To Do With Jews or Israel) in his Jewish Advocate column of last week. The Advocate no longer has its archives online, so Tom has kindly sent along the column for posting. Here it is:

The very liberal use of Judaism

There is a perception that mainstream Jewish organizations, especially those under the umbrella of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies, have diverted resources to the pursuit of causes that have little or nothing to do with Jewish issues. Yet it's more than just a perception. It's a fact.

Whenever a mainstream Jewish organization like the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) proclaims that "pursuing social justice" is one of its primary goals, it's generally a given that this has little to do with actual Jewish interests and a lot to do with liberal or even far-left causes. The very term "social justice" has long since become co-opted as part of the lexicon of American Jewish leftists, who use it as a banner to advocate, fundraise, and recruit members for their latest left-wing cause du jour.

Other Jewish organizations have also joined the trend to propagate nonsensical leftist causes, such as the American Jewish Congress, with their odd fixation on fighting Christian Nativity displays on public property, the result of which has only caused to alienate mainstream Christians. Not content with simply aggravating Christians, they've also initiated litigation to ban Chanukah menorahs on public land.

Martin Solomon, the founder and proprietor of the on-line Jewish news and commentary service, Solomonia, recently produced a carefully documented critique of the JCRC. He analyzed the JCRC official notices, called Action Alerts, sent out to their extensive e-mail list over a one year period, from November 2007 through October 2008. Mr. Solomon documented that "37% of Boston of JCRC Action Alerts had nothing to do with Jews or Israel."

Some of the JCRC Action Alerts include:

"Reminder to join us at the State House for the Interfaith Pledge for Climate Action: A Day of Prayer and Advocacy." One of nine Action Alerts dealing with global warming, which the JCRC adamantly believes in. Problem is, a lot of us don't.

"Support is needed for Affordable Housing." Using tax dollars (i.e., your money) to provide housing for those who can't or won't seek gainful employment.

"CARE for Youth: Action Needed on the Health Education Bill." Echoing the call of Planned Parenthood and the AIDS Action Committee for more instruction on condom usage in the public schools.

"Ask your Congressman to vote in favor of the Energy Bill." Again the global warming controversy, this time on a federal level.

None of these issues which the JCRC advocates on behalf of the Jewish community has anything to do with Jews, Israel, or Judaism, but, invariably, the JCRC claims they do. As Mr. Solomon observed, global warming is not a Jewish issue, but rather, a political issue. Yet on this and similar matters, the JCRC seems not to know the difference between Jewish and political issues.

Or as Brian Camenker of the conservative advocacy group Mass Resistance offered, "The JCRC is a hardcore leftwing organization that purports itself to be the voice of the Jewish community." Nowhere was this more evident than on three recent controversial issues: illegal immigration, higher taxes, and gay marriage.

The JCRC disseminated at least five Action Alerts this past year to advocate for tuition discounts and state scholarships for illegal aliens in the state university system. They even sent Governor Patrick a letter urging him to grant these financial subsidies to students "regardless of immigration status." Aside from the obvious fact that the JCRC has trouble understanding the "illegal" part of illegal aliens, what is appalling is that as a Jewish organization it presented the notion that giving illegal aliens taxpayer money is something that the Jewish community is in favor of.

The JCRC came out in favor of keeping the state income tax (Action Alert 9/18/08 -Vote No on Ballot Question 1). Why higher taxes are vital to the interests of Jews, the JCRC did [not] elaborate on. But they did conclude that eliminating the state income tax, (i.e. citizens keeping more of their own money) could adversely affect the middle and working classes already affected by the economic downturn. Got that?

Perhaps the most egregious example of the JCRC advocating for an issue that is not and never will be a Jewish issue is the gay marriage controversy. Yet there they were, on the ramparts with gay activists, imploring the state legislature to allow gays to marry. Actually, if the JCRC had any real knowledge of their own religion, they'd know that Judaism does in fact take a stand on gay marriage. The Torah forbids it.

Yet the JCRC is hardly alone in confusing extreme liberalism with Judaism.

As a point of pedantry, the 37% figure referred to all emails calling for some sort of action (including attending an event). As I noted at the time, if only the email alerts actually labeled "Action Alert" (after a search for the words 'action' or 'alert') are examined, the ratio is far worse for JCRC: 66% having nothing to do with Judaism.

There isn't a military or political genius on the planet who could neatly resolve what's happening in Gaza. Hamas (itself, its own fault -- granted, also with help from abroad) has created a brutal reality between the parties. The reality of their goals and the nature of the group itself have created a situation that will, by nature and historical example, lead necessarily to brutal results if the problem is to be solved. Our modern web of international institutions (in the broadest sense: media, law, international forums, diplomacy, etc...) have created shackles that no leader who games out the consequences of any action can fully break out of.

Just as no Israeli (or any democratic) leader can ignore the violence emanating from the strip, no democratic leader can, as a practical matter, fully take the actions necessary to end it. The shackles have, by mandating brutal solutions no accountable leader can face, denied that leader the ability to end it. Instead, a situation has been created where the violence grinds on and evil flourishes.

So Israel is gearing up for a response to the massive barrage of rockets and mortars from a reprobate population, and I can hear the groaning already that Olmert and Livni are still the ones in charge given their history. For one, let's hope they learned some lessons, for another, I'm not sure what anyone would be able to do except marginally better, given the reality they have to deal with. Here are a few links:

Lisa Goldman: Hamas Goads Israel Into War

The shaky six-month Egypt-brokered truce between Israel and Gaza ended last Friday with exchanges of fire across the border. While diplomats scrambled to negotiate an extension of the ceasefire, Islamic Jihad, a militant organization that Hamas claims it does not control, celebrated the end of the truce by pounding Sderot and the western Negev with 'round the clock barrages of Qassams. They also launched Grad rockets at Ashkelon, which is usually out of Qassam range. The barrages escalated as this week wore on, with 88 landing in Sderot and the surrounding communities over a one-day period on Wednesday. The IDF, meanwhile, killed three Palestinians who were laying explosives on the Gaza-Israel fence.

Confined to their homes and fearful, the residents of Sderot and the western Negev are having a particularly gloomy Hanukkah. For many, the situation has become intolerable. Two out of three children in Sderot suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder...

Amos Harel and Avi Issacharoff: Stewing in their own juices

It took less than a week for Israel's decision makers to change their minds entirely. Exactly the same people - who last week presented convincing reasons to justify continuing the policy of restraint in the Gaza Strip, and expressed the fear that a large-scale military action would result in an expected imbroglio - have now changed their tune completely. It is doubtful whether even Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni's lightning visit yesterday with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo will lead to a turnabout at this point. Israel is about to retaliate fiercely to Hamas' attacks. The situation will not necessarily develop into an all-out war (at the moment, neither side appears to be interested in that), but the coming days will, so it seems, mark the end to restraint...

Earthrise: Apollo 8, the first manned mission to the moon, entered lunar orbit on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 1968. That evening, the astronauts -- Commander Frank Borman, Command Module Pilot Jim Lovell, and Lunar Module Pilot William Anders -- held a live broadcast from lunar orbit, in which they showed pictures of the Earth and moon as seen from their spacecraft. Said Lovell, "The vast loneliness is awe-inspiring and it makes you realize just what you have back there on Earth." They ended the broadcast with the crew taking turns reading from the book of Genesis.

Palestinian Media Watch has a report on the latest round of Gaza legislative 'reforms' (in full below -- not on the web yet). American banks are now in the process of accommodating themselves to Shariah, but this is what it brings with it in addition to moving dollars around:

Hamas enacts Islamic (Sharia) laws: Hand amputation, crucifixion, lashes and execution
By Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook

Hamas members of the Palestinian Legislative Council in Gaza have approved a new bill "to implement Koranic punishments," including hand amputation, crucifixion, corporal punishment and execution. Drinking, owning or producing wine is punished by 40 lashes, while drinking in public adds three months' imprisonment. Several laws are directed against Hamas's Palestinian rivals, including a law intended to inhibit non-Hamas negotiators by sentencing to death anyone who was "appointed to negotiate with a foreign government on a Palestinian issue and negotiated against Palestinians' interest."

What the hell are they thinking? The Queen gives her Christmas address, and then, like a 'response' after a political address, they get someone else to give an 'alternate.' Look who gets the face time (without a response to the response I presume): Iran's Ahmadinejad to give alternative Christmas message

...Mr Ahmadinejad's speech will go out at 7.15pm, four hours after the Queen's traditional Christmas Day message is broadcast on the main channels. His message is a spiritual one but includes some more nakedly political elements - including the implicit claim that if Jesus Christ were alive today, he would oppose US hegemony...

Apparently they court controversy in these things:

...In 2006 a fully-veiled British-born Muslim woman used the message to attack Jack Straw, then Home Secretary, for his criticism of the niqab (face veil) earlier the same year...

Well deserved. Charles Winters ran arms to the Jewish Community of Palestine in the late 1940's. I linked to the story back in September: Son Seeks Pardon for Protestant Bostonian Who Sought to Arm Unarmed Jews. The link to the original article is expired, but can be found here.

George Bush has indeed included Charles Winters in his ongoing list of pardons:

...Winters, who died in the 1980s in Florida, was in the airplane business after World War II. He bought up former military cargo planes and used them to transport fruit and other products. He later started helping his Jewish friends who were shipping arms to Jews trying to found their own state in the Middle East.

Winters, a Protestant from Boston, could fly his planes in and out of the region without interference from authorities. In 1948, three of his planes left Miami, picked up weapons in Azores and Czechoslovakia and then left the planes and arms in Palestine.

Winters was convicted of violating the Neutrality Act, fined $5,000 and sentenced to serve 18 months in prison. The act is designed to ensure that financial assistance and arms are not provided to parties in foreign conflicts where the U.S. has not taken sides.

Two others, Herman Greenspun and Al Schwimmer, also were convicted of violating the act, but they did not serve time. President Kennedy pardoned Greenspun in 1961. President Clinton pardoned Schwimmer in 2000...

Some people look at the season as something to be enjoyed, and others look upon it as an opportunity. NGO Monitor has the report: "Hijacked by Hatred": British NGOs Use Christmas for anti-Israel Attacks

...In advance of Christmas 2008, several British NGOs have returned to previous theological offensives against Israel by combining emphasis on Bethlehem, stories of Palestinian suffering, and false allegations of Israeli cruelty. Through Christmas cards, carols, and charity fundraising, War on Want, Amos Trust, Pax Christi and others condemn Israel's security barrier and erase the Palestinian terror campaign that necessitates it.  As in previous years when NGOs used Underground  station advertisements and  greeting cards, these campaigns capitalize on holiday sentiment and Christian religious symbols to declare that "the wall must fall" and present  a biased view of the conflict...

The New York Times ignored it, but Pajamas Media has the response from the FBI informant who infiltrated the Weather Underground and between he and PJM poster Bob Owens, a little bit of the historical record is set straight:The Op-Ed the New York Times Wouldn't Run

My name is Larry Grathwohl and I infiltrated the Weather Underground for the FBI. I had no idea when my journey began in August 1969 that I would see and experience the degree of violence and hatred of our democracy that existed in the Weather Underground. Bernardine Dorhn, Bill Ayers, and the other people I would meet had as their sole purpose the destruction of the United States. The fact that I ultimately became the only source of information regarding the activities of the Weather Underground and the fact that Bill Ayers now claims their goal was only to bring about the end of the war in Vietnam requires me to respond...

It's that season of the year -- Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year...Solomonia's been in low gear of late (you noticed?). Wife's out of town you know? Enjoying the bachelor life. Perfect time for it. Doing a lot of shoveling, too. It's always nice when the snow comes down during the hours you're at home. Nothing to do for it but heat the mead and keep up with it by walking the driveway with the plow/shovel every couple of inches. It's a much better situation than when you wake up with a foot of snow on the ground you have to muscle through. It's nice exercise to boot.

Hope you're all having a lovely holiday season!

Have you been following this spat between Ron Rosenbaum and Jeff Jarvis? Rosenbaum is too kind to his friends in the MSM (there are plenty of good beat reporters out there, but too many, and too many editors and publishers getting exactly what they deserve), but his criticism of the insufferable Jarvis and his endless philosophizing on blogging and social media is spot on. I used to like Jarvis a lot, but he's taken on the persona of one of those guys corporations bring in to give speeches about "subverting the dominant paradigm" that the staff needs to suffer through before getting back to work.

Last Wednesday I was invited to a Boston "Town Hall" meeting for the 'Independent' Film Channel's (I put Independent in scare-quotes because, let's face it, if you're taking funding from someone other than yourself, you're really not exactly independent are you? Non-profits have agendas, too.) Media Project being held at the MIT Museum. It being a slow time around the office, and never being one to pass up a free lunch with a side of potential blogables I headed on in to Cambridge.

The first thing that struck me when I arrived was that independent film sure was well-funded. From the uniformed IFC staff, to the decorations -- including wall posters, table centerpieces, and slick hand-outs -- to the flown-in guests, the setting showed off a budget to be spent beyond the shoe-string. It's not surprising to note that the project is funded in part by the uber Aspen Institute. Prince Bandar (a lifetime trustee, and in fairness, one of many heavy-hitters on the board) is doing well for his money. Ironically, MSM guests had seats reserved mostly down front. The rest of us had to fend for ourselves.

Here are a couple of photos. Sorry about the quality, but I was trying to do it without the flash. This should give you some idea of the setting, though:

P1040168.JPG

P1040174.JPG

The format was a box-lunch, followed by panel discussion, and concluded with a series of discussion questions to be responded to by table in response to a sample news report (real) from Boston television. The panel included Tucker Carlson, Juan Williams, Martin Baron (Boston Globe Editor), Candy Altman (VP News, Hearst-Argyle television), and Josh Silver (from something called Free Press.net).

I had read the press-release and browsed around the Media Project's web site before going, of course. The site, including clips of the IFC's series Revealing the Truth Behind the News, provides a certain impression on the IFC's slant on media literacy. It appears they don't believe the media is quite leftist enough.

Interestingly, the intro for Juan Williams explained he was an author, and that "we've seen and heard him" on NPR. Funny, I've never heard him on NPR, but I have seen him frequently on FOX News. It wasn't mentioned in the spoken intro, and rates only a sentence in his written bio.

The series was 'produced by Meghan O'Hara (FAHRENHEIT 911 and SICKO) and Nick McKinney (The Daily Show and Morgan Spurlock's "30 Days").' Segments include interviews conducted by Cambridge paleo-lefty comedian Jimmy Tingle and Middle East history professor Mark "I'm still trying to get back at my parents for making be have a Bar Mitzvah" LeVine. (Episode 1 includes an interview (video) with journalist Ken Silverstein lamenting that a column of his that was to include a couple of sentences of quote from a Hizballah official acknowledging the reality of the Holocaust was cut. 'The Lobby,' or something else...")

The panel kicked off with the viewing of an animation riffing on the culture of narcissism the media caters to, and then a clip entitled "The Missing White Girl." (A longer clip than that was shown, focusing on the phenomenon of the Caylee Anthony case, IIRC).

The lesson we were expected to draw was to question why one little suburban white girl garnered all this attention (racism...catering to a white audience for ratings). A subtitle at the end of the clip noted that in the time the case was reported on, 100,000 other children had been reported missing. To their credit, Tucker Carlson, Candy Altman, and Juan Williams all jumped on this noting that in itself was deceptive (since clearly most even legitimate missing reports involve custody cases, not murder), and while Tucker expressed his distaste with the exorbitant attention paid to such matters, all agreed that the case was at least a legitimate news story.

Mr. Free Press, Josh Silver (a graduate of prestigious Evergreen State in Oregon), lamented that the trouble with the media today was the lack of "proper government regulation" in the news business. (Thus speaks the voice of independence today.) He lamented the deregulation which has allowed corporate media consolidation.

Again to their credit, Carlson and the Globe's Marty Baron jumped all over this. Carlson noted that the last thing you want is the government involved in trying to find solutions to problems like this. If the people in the individual enterprises on the ground are at a loss to solve their ongoing failings, there's no way that some bureaucrats in Washington are going to find the solution. Baron absolutely agreed, noting that the 'media monopoly' thing was something that was very in vogue and repeated by university types, but the truth is that no one who knows what's really going on believes it. It's essentially a meaningless trope repeated by people who don't really know what they're talking about.

In fact, they both agreed that what's actually happening is media "atomization." There's more competition than ever before. (Internet readers should be familiar with the idea.)

We then watched a news report from actual Boston news about a shooting murder in Dorchester. (The report was the initial one of a 'walk by' shooting played up for maximum emotional impact and was pretty well edited I thought.) After some further panel comments, this one was thrown out to the audience. We were given printed cards with a series of questions for discussion around the table (see pic).

discussioncard.jpg

Our table got question four, "How might different people interpret the message differently?"

The folks around the table weren't exactly anxious to talk (there was a lot of silence before anyone spoke up), and we didn't have much time anyway. What I noted once again was how unspoken bias perpetuates as the first people to speak up are those willing to mouth what they perceive as the expected and (thus) politically correct response. It's safe and easy. If not everyone agreed, no one bothered trying to shift the discussion within the scope of the time provided.

In this case, after going from a case (Caylee Anthony) where one idea we were to take away was that the media were catering suburban white racism -- the usual criticism being that these little white girls get all the attention while inner-city murders are barely noticed -- now suddenly the initial consensus was emerging that this report catered to white racism by making white suburbanites afraid of the inner city (imagine that!). What was funny was that the impression I got was that while this was what the young white folks at the table were mouthing, along with some of the 'community activist-types' (some of whom, when the mic came around, did less media criticism and more mini-speechifying about what 'our community' needs to do to improve [they have the answers]) around the room, the more regular folks, including some high school kids, (including one young lady who actually had known the victim of this particular shooting), were seeing it in far more straightforward terms, even noting that the camera angle failed to show the abandoned building right across the street and failed to mention the drug dealing that went on there, thus bowdlerizing the report in a way, or at least focusing more on community impact (through the emotional testimony of the witnesses) over substance and context. Sometimes methinks we interpret too much.

All in all, and interesting couple of hours.

Humberto Fontova, author of Exposing the Real Che Guevara: And the Useful Idiots Who Idolize Him. The perfect man to review the new film: Che rides again in Hollywood

"Che" film gets thumbs up in Cuba," ran the headline from CNN's Havana Bureau on Dec. 8. Benicio Del Toro, who stars as Che, was in the Cuban capital at the Havana Film Festival this week-end presenting the movie he co-produced. "Che the movie met Che the myth in Cuba this weekend," starts the CNN report, "and the lengthy biopic of the Argentinean revolutionary won acclaim from among those who know his story best. "

Indeed, but the acclaim came because those "who knew his story best" (Castro and his Stalinist henchmen, the film's chief mentors) saw that their directives had been followed slavishly, that Che's (genuine) story was completely absent from the movie...

Like:

..."I'm here in Cuba's hills thirsting for blood," Che wrote his abandoned wife in 1957. "Dear Papa, today I discovered I really like killing," he wrote shortly afterwards. Alas, this killing very rarely involved combat; it come from the close-range murder of bound and blindfolded men and boys.

"When you saw the beaming look on Che's face as the victims were tied to the stake and blasted apart," said a former political prisoner to this writer, "you knew there was something seriously, seriously wrong with Che Guevara." In fact the one genuine accomplishment in Che Guevara's life was the mass-murder of defenseless men and boys. Under his own gun dozens died. Under his orders thousands crumpled. At everything else Che Guevara failed abysmally, even comically. Yet Soderbergh and Del Toro skip over these fascinating quotes and Che's one genuine accomplishment as a revolutionary...

But Che is "all about love and compassion!"

Money spent for something called 'peace,' apparently: Palestinians got $1.7bln in aid last year: France

The international community has given 1.7 billion dollars (1.18 billion euros) in aid to the Palestinian Authority over the last year, the French foreign ministry said Wednesday.

That was 0.6 billion dollars more than was promised at a major donor conference held last December in Paris, spokesman Frederic Desagneaux said.

At that conference, donors promised to provide 7.4 billion dollars over three years, which was considerably more than the 5.6 billion dollars the Palestinians had requested.

The donors agreed to allocate 1.1 billion dollars in the first year.

"Such payments above the promises made are the concrete sign of the exceptional engagement of the international community," Desagneaux said.

The conference agreed a package of aid to stabilise the Palestinian economy and try to shore up the faltering peace process with Israel.

Palestinian leaders said the money was needed for direct support to the budget to help develop a viable economy and institutions for a future Palestinian state.

Pampered.

MEMRI: Tunisians Angered by Screening of Film on Jewish Life in Nazi-Occupied France

The screening in Tunisia of a French film dealing with Jewish life in Nazi-occupied France has raised a storm of criticism. "Un Secret" ("A Secret"), directed by the French-Jewish director Claude Miller and starring the popular French-Jewish singer Patrick Bruel, was shown at the opening of the 15th annual Festival of European Cinema in Tunis.

Filmgoers Walk Out on Film that is "Too Favorable to the Jews"

Tunisian filmgoers walked out 30 minutes into the film "A Secret," which deals with a Jewish family in Nazi-occupied France, claiming that it was "too favorable to the Jews." Filmgoers told aljazeera.net, the website of the Al-Jazeera satellite TV station, that they wondered why Europe was so favorable to the Jews, and France in particular, whose president they described as the "pro-Jewish Sarkozy."

The Tunisian organizer of the festival, Ibrahim Al-Latif, blamed the European delegation, which was responsible for the choice of films. One young filmgoer told aljazeera.net that the decision to screen "A Secret" led some people "to feel that the European delegation, which oversees the festival, is under Jewish control."...

The Netherlands says it will stay away from a United Nations conference on racism scheduled for next spring unless draft documents disproportionately critical of Israel are amended. The announcement is the latest indication that a boycott campaign may slowly be picking up steam.

Canada and Israel already have declared they will stay away; the European Union is considering its position, while Australia and New Zealand have expressed concern.

The Bush administration has been critical and declined to fund the process leading up to the conference, but it stopped short this year of announcing a final decision on participation...

Poverty and terror? How about terror in a Mercedes? British Physician Is Convicted of 2007 Car-Bomb Plot

A British jury Tuesday found a doctor from an Iraqi family guilty of plotting to murder on a mass scale in failed car-bomb attacks last year in London and Glasgow.

Bilal Abdulla, 29, who practiced medicine in Britain, drove a Mercedes sedan packed with gas cylinders and nails into central London in June 2007 with the intent of killing hundreds, the prosecution said. After the homemade car bomb he had parked outside a crowded nightclub failed to detonate, Abdulla joined an attempted suicide attack the next day targeting Glasgow's airport, according to prosecutors.

He faces life in prison in connection with both attacks and is to be sentenced Wednesday.

Born in Britain to Iraqi parents, Abdulla was accused of wanting to take revenge for friends, relatives and other civilians killed in Iraq by British and U.S. troops.

The terrorist case involving medical professionals sworn to save lives has shocked and unnerved many people here...

David T. at Harry's Place explains it all:

There is a theory, popular with the foreign policy establishment, that the best way to defeat violent extremism, is to find people who are ideologically close to violent extremism, and do a deal with them. You find the sonuvabitch who is "our friend" and pit him against the sonuvabitch who is "our enemy". You install him in power. Big smiles for the press, handshakes all round. Then you walk away. When the whacking and chopping and mass murder starts, you shake your head in sorrow from behind your desk in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, relieved that it is now no longer "our problem".

That model doesn't work, as far as domestic politics are concerned. You can't "walk away" from the problems you create here. Britain is our home.

What made the Muslim Contact Unit's decision to partner with Islamists respectable, was the thesis that there is a "good Muslim Brotherhood" and a "bad Muslim Brotherhood". Robert Leiken of the Nixon Centre puts the theory well here:

It became clear that there were two main currents within the Muslim Brotherhood. Some members were reactionary and dogmatic, were probably anti-Semitic and certainly anti-Zionist, wanted Israel to vanish and made that a principle of their politics and world view. The Supreme Guide expresses such views. But we found those views to be a severe embarrassment to other leading Brothers. We talked to powerful Brotherhood leaders who took public positions extolling Jews. This trend seems to be on the ascent.

Leiken expounded his theory that the Muslim Brotherhood is a "safety valve for moderate Islam" at length in his article, The Moderate Muslim Brotherhood.

I think that Leiken is off his rocker, frankly.

Unfortunately, our foreign policy and our state department are following the same off-the-rocker policy, with the same results. We ally with "friendly" sonuvabitches like the Saudis and the Pakistanis, we legitimize these terror-supporting regimes, and terrorists slaughter people around the world on a weekly basis. Winston Churchill was right about the problems that can arise from feeding crocodiles. Look at the current mess that was the British "Empire". Proof that this policy has never worked, and it will never work.

I'd suggest that Islamists have three main aims in engaging with the British state.

The first is validation. Those involved in Islamist politics are narcissistic fantasists. They imagine themselves - like the Blues Brothers - to be on a "mission from God". Somebody like Azad Ali is, in reality, a middle aged civil servant. However it flatters him when senior civil servants and police officers treat him as somebody who matters, who is doing something meaningful and significant, and who should therefore be treated seriously, rather than laughed at as a crank.

Islamist groups also leverage validation by one organisation, to persuade others to treat them seriously. If the Metropolitian Police think you're a serious person, then an MP will speak at your conference. If an MP speaks at your conference, you're more likely to get an op ed in a mainstream newspaper. If you get your op ed, a senior judge is more likely to support you. That is the strategy. And, if somebody then points out that you've been calling for jihad, or support banned terrorist groups, the fact that you've got the backing of the Metropolitant Police, a mainstream newspaper, an MP, and a senior judge makes it easy for you to attack your opponent as a racist and Islamophobe who is trying to "smear" you.

The second aim is influence. There are prizes to be had for playing the game. As a reward for working with the Metropolitan Police, Bob Lambert's team installed the Muslim Brotherhood - in place of Abu Hamza - in the Finsbury Park Mosque. One of the trustees they put in place, Mohammed Sawalha, had been named by the BBC as a fugitive Hamas commander. Muslim Brotherhood front groups have been working hard to get their hands on a share of the Preventing Violent Extremism pot. In Tower Hamlets, they succeeded. They promptly used the money to stage a 'debate' between the Muslim Brotherhood, Al Muhajiroun and Hizb ut Tahrir.

But the rewards on offer are not simply monetary. What the Muslim Brotherhood dearly would love, is to be treated by the state as the rightful intermediary for British Muslims. They would like input into policy formation. They would like to be able to bargain with the Government, in the name of all British Muslims. In particular, they want to appear on television, deploring terrorism, but explaining that because the Government hasn't followed its sensible advice, there's nothing it can do to stop the young hotheads from blowing themselves up.

There's a telling phrase in Andy Hayman's op ed piece, and it is this. He argues that there is no point is building bridges with Muslims who are "safe but ... not really representative". I very much hope that what Andy Hayman means is that Islamists are 'representative' of those who are involved in, or supportive of, violent jihad: and not "representative" of British Muslims generally. The former interpretation is spot on: the latter is simply untrue. The danger we face, however, is that by treating Islamists as the legitimate representatives of British Muslims, we will have created a self-fulfilling prophecy. We will have made them kings of their communities. What do you think they will do with that influence?..

...If the police want to find Muslims to help them "deradicalise" potential jihadists, they should partner with those who have been jihadists, but have turned their back on that politics altogether: not individuals and groups which support terrorism in any country but ours.

This essay offers a full explanation of how Britain's anti terrorism policies grow and nurture local (and worldwide) terrorist groups. Britain has been feeding the crocodile, hoping to be eaten last. Unfortunately, many countries follow the British model for 'fighting' (ie. nuturing and growing) terrorism. We're all feeding the crocodile.

So who will the crocodile eat first? That decision is up to the jihadis, not us. By following the British model we give all the power to the jihadis and none to us. Our superior intelligence is no match for their puny weapons.

If there's anything our new administration needs to change, it's this.

From City Journal: Michael Totten's "The (Really) Moderate Muslims of Kosovo"

Milošević used the ancient grievance, along with others both real and imagined, to kindle Serbian nationalism--"a totalitarian ideology," as Serbian writer Filip David calls it. Three months after his speech at Kosovo Polje, Milošević revoked Kosovo's political autonomy and imposed an apartheid-like system on its ethnic Albanian majority. There followed three wars in the breakaway republics of Slovenia, Bosnia, and Croatia, and then a fourth of ethnic cleansing in Kosovo at a time when the United States and NATO were in no mood to tolerate any more violent destabilization in Europe. NATO bombarded Yugoslav targets for two and a half months in 1999 until Milošević capitulated and relinquished control of Kosovo to NATO and Russia.

Though Albanian nationalism is less ideological than Serbian nationalism, it, too, can express itself through ugly outbursts of violence. After ethnic Albanian refugees returned to Kosovo under NATO protection in 1999, some lashed out at Serb civilians, houses, and Orthodox churches. Another wave of anti-Serb violence broke out in 2004, following rumors that Albanian children had drowned in the Ibar River after being chased off by Serbs.

But this violence, like the 1999 war, rose out of ethnic tensions, not religious ones. These were fights not between Muslims and Christians but between Albanians and Serbs--and though, again, most Albanians are Muslim and all Serbs are Orthodox Christian, the distinction is crucial. Kosovo's Albanian Muslims and Albanian Catholics get along perfectly well with one another; in fact, during the war, they fought side by side. And in the later attacks, ethnic Albanian mobs burned Orthodox churches because they were Serb, not because they were Christian. Catholic churches weren't touched--because their congregations were Albanian. (This isn't a matter of anti-Orthodox sentiment among Muslims, either. Though no Albanian Orthodox Christians live in Kosovo, 20 percent of the population in Albania itself is Albanian Orthodox, and relations between them and the Albanian Muslim majority are perfectly fine.)

Some observers, especially in Serbia, have blamed the violence in 1999 and 2004 on Islamist jihadists. Those who live and work in Kosovo, and who are charged with keeping the peace, dismiss the allegation. "We've been here for so long and not seen any evidence of it that we've reached the assumption that it is not a viable threat," says Zachary Gore, a U.S. Army sergeant stationed in eastern Kosovo.

Kosovo's brand of Islam may be the most liberal in the world.

A Tectonic Feast
On Oct. 5, 2008, just after coming within about 15 miles of the surface of Enceladus, NASA's Cassini captured this stunning mosaic as the spacecraft sped away from this geologically active moon of Saturn. Craters and cratered terrains are rare in this view of the southern region of the moon's Saturn-facing hemisphere. Instead, the surface is replete with fractures, folds, and ridges--all hallmarks of remarkable tectonic activity for a relatively small world. In this enhanced-color view, regions that appear blue-green are thought to be coated with larger grains than those that appear white or gray...[more]

That's what they call Naim Ateek, anyway. Ateek, as readers here know, is the founder of the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center and a full-time anti-Israel activist. He's got a new book out, and all the best liberal Christians are praising it. In it he accuses Israel "a slow and creeping genocide." I'm fairly certain a slow genocide is in the same genus and species as jumbo shrimp. Dexter Van Zile has the scoop: Have They No Shame? Have They No Decency?

...Rev. Dr. Ateek's assertion that Israel has perpetrated a "slow and creeping genocide" is libelous, contemptible and chimerical. The population of Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip has quadrupled over the past 60 years. The modifers "slow and creeping" do not make Ateek's accusation any less dishonest.

To hide the obscene nature of his charge, Rev. Dr. Ateek tucks it in between a terrible and hostile quote from an extremist Jewish group and a description of Israelis using dogs to attack Israelis. The quote, however terrible, does not represent the opinion of all Israelis toward Palestinians, a fact that Rev. Dr. Ateek himself acknowledges with the phrase "some Zionists." He then asserts that this belief was put into practice "over time."

Exactly how? By allowing Palestinians -- even those responsible for violence against Israel -- into its hospitals during times of conflict? By allowing food and medical supplies into the Gaza Strip while rockets land in Sderot? By according Palestinians standing before its Supreme Court?

This is "genocide"?...

Here's a revealing piece at the LA Times on the retribution some Egyptian intellectual and cultural figures have faced from their peers just for treating their Israeli neighbors as human -- and not just Israeli, but Jewish neighbors as well, as in the case of the singer who performed at the Cairo synagogue. Brains, education and talent have a limited (and, one could argue, perhaps even an inverse) relationship to a the possession of a moral sense. Hitler's first bastions were the universities. Martin Heidegger was an active Nazi.

Egyptian intellectuals pay price for curiosity

..."Producers are afraid to come near me," said Salem, who in 1994 drove his car across Israel and wrote what critics considered a sympathetic book about the journey. "I anticipated there would be a strong reaction, but I didn't expect it would be so mean. It's hard and this is the wound."

Salem, a columnist for Al Hayat newspaper and a co-founder of the Cairo Peace Movement, added: "Peace is the right idea. But Egyptian intellectuals are afraid and can't get rid of their ancient fears. They still think Israel and the U.S. will inflict something bad upon us."

There are degrees of resistance among intellectuals toward rapprochement. Many oppose improving relations until Palestinians have their own state; others support limited peace but are guarded when discussing the passions around the Arab-Israeli conflict; a few have visited Israel to interact with their Jewish counterparts.

And, occasionally, an artist unwittingly becomes the target of screeds and opinion page vitriol. Filmmaker Nadia Kamel's recent documentary about her mother's Jewish roots was attacked as a call to "normalize" relations with Israel. Opera singer Gaber Beltagui had his membership in the musicians union suspended in 2007 when he sang at the 100th anniversary of a Cairo synagogue.

Michael Totten On the Hunt in Baghdad:

Last time I was in Baghdad, in the summer of 2007, I was told that most suspects surrender the instant they realize their house is surrounded. Fighting would be suicidal, and most terror cell leaders do not seek martyrdom. But the guy we were after was far more vicious and crazy than average.

"Is he the kind of guy who might shoot at us during a raid?" I said to Captain Clint Rusch in the Tactical Operations Center.

"Oh yeah," he said. "He's definitely the kind of guy who will shoot at us. He's a really bad dude." There was even a chance he was wearing suicide vest.

The tip-off came in over the phone late at night when the terrorist leader's meeting was almost scheduled to be finished. By the time everyone had their gear and was ready to go, we had seventeen minutes or less to drive across a portion of Sadr City and break down the door before the meeting was over.

We ran to the Humvees.

"Go with Sergeant Gonzales," Captain Looney said to me. "When we dismount, catch up to me and stay on me." He looked angry all of a sudden, but mostly he was just being serious. Any of us might be killed in less than an hour.

Our convoy of Humvees roared down Baghdad's streets in the dark without headlights. I checked my watch. No time to waste. We had eleven minutes to catch the bastard before his meeting was scheduled to end. Hopefully he and his pals were on "Arab time" and would hang out and drink tea for a while before heading out...

Did you know that Amazon.com Gift Cards make a wonderful gift? In fact, they've got all kinds of great stuff over there? Even cooler, if you use those links to buy something, your favorite blog (if I do say so myself) will get a cut, and it doesn't add to your cost at all! Wow! Justify the time I spend on this blog and enhance my marital 'bliss' (that's what most people call it, right?) by allowing me to say, "Oh look, honey, someone used my links and I have enough for a gift certificate!" (After I already bought myself something, of course.) Keep the divorce attorneys at bay! Look over there under "If You Enjoy This Site," too -- the links are always there.

Oh heck, got some...what is it...it's been so long...oh yeah...cash burning a hole in your pocket? Why, you can make those end of year payouts right here using Amazon (small amounts and completely anonymous) or Paypal (larger amounts and you will receive a thank you from me). Have an elderly loved one looking to dump assets rather than let the state get them (I will be happy to provide a note stating that the payment is absolutely non-refundable)? The perfect place! No, not tax deductible exactly, but I'll certainly be deducting it from my internet expenses, insurance payments, home heating oil, mortgage life-changing hemorrhoid surgery (you know how expensive decent health insurance coverage is these days?) and my mistress's rent (fantasy). Such a deal. Other arrangements can be made for those uncomfortable with internet payments. (Personal checks are a-ok.) Heck, I'll even take corporate stock off your hands (it's that desperate). For the right amount, you will be entered in my 'Win a Date with the Blogger' contest. Exciting. Alternatively, flag your payment with a note and we will call it a 'Keep the Blogger the Hell Away from Me' payoff.

You don't want me asking the GOVERNMENT for assistance do you? Bleh.

Even if you don't choose to donate, may your own stockings be stuffed full this year (and I don't just mean the canckles -- haha)!

In her post Iraq at the Crossroads, medaura asks:

Violence in Iraq has progressively declined throughout last summer and is now at record-low levels. Positive internal developments, while conveniently neglected until very recently (read: before the election), have lately flooded the media scene. What are we to make of Iraq today?

Michael Yon reports from the boonies of Afghanistan:

It's hard to say how much of this fight belongs to the Afghans, and how much is ours. It should be theirs. It won't succeed until it is their fight -- even if they need some back-up help from us. One thing is certain: We are not "rebuilding" Afghanistan; it was never built to begin with. Centuries of repelling invaders kept the country free. But, perversely, it also meant that Afghanistan never benefited from the advances that most colonial power brought to the remote, primitive places they colonized...

..The NDS officer said he had gone to an intelligence school in Tashkent. He told of many sorts of fighters who are coming into Zabul Province, and I asked what he thought about al-Qaeda. He said that the fight between the Americans and al-Qaeda is our fight, and he has nothing against al-Qaeda. I asked what he thought of the Lithuanian Special Forces soldiers, and he said they were very good. I said those are big words coming from an Afghan man, and the whole room laughed. I asked the NDS officer when the war would end, and he said he has been fighting since he was nine-years-old, and that now he is forty, and that fighting is all he knows...

..U.S. and Afghan soldiers in Zabul Province give high marks to the Lithuanian Special Forces, who like to ride these captured Taliban motorbikes to sneak up on, and chase Taliban fighters. The "LithSof" are on their way to becoming living legends: Both Afghans and Americans report that the Taliban are afraid of the Lithuanians. Stories about them are filled with dangerous escapades and humor.

Americans say that the Lithuanians are sort of a weaponized version of Borat, who think nothing of sauntering around a base in nothing but flip-flops and underwear. "They look like mountain men. They never shave, sometimes don't bathe, and often roll out the gate wearing nothing but body armor and weapons. Not even a t-shirt," an American soldier told me. The Lithuanians may be a little bit nuts, but the Americans love to have them around because Lithuanians love to fight, and when you need backup, you can count on them. That contrasts starkly with many of the NATO "partners." Maybe when your country spends almost a half-century with the Soviet boot on its neck, its first generation of free soldiers know what freedom is worth -- and that you sometimes have to fight for it.

The other day I hooked up with CAMERA's Christian Media Analyst, Dexter Van Zile, to make a little video of Dexter discussing the Mennonites, and what their problem with Israel just might be. Here is a search at CAMERA, and here as well. The Mennonites have been one of the primary denominations pushing divestment and recently dined with Ahmadinejad.

He begins by bringing up the UN's Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann (not a Mennonite), and takes off from there:

Bummer. MEMRI videos have been a mainstay of this blog for a long time. I was going to link to this video of Arab Islamist Clerics to Palestinians: Slaughter the Jews Like You Did in 1929; Blow Yourselves Up in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv when I noticed the video now carries a registration required notice -- and not just the run of the mill free registration, but registration that requires a phone number, has to be reviewed by a real person and may take three business days to process. That's a bit more than I would expect the average reader to be bothered with.

Yes, it looks like the transcript is still available, though nothing hits home like pictures. Of course, it's up to MEMRI to do what they feel they have to do, though it's disappointing since I love to see word get out to the widest possible audience, and that happens only with non-registration required sites, free registration next, and "we want your phone number and will get back to you in three days" registration-required sites last. (I just remembered their YouTube channel, but I don't think they put all the videos on there.)

So...if you see more links to just the transcripts from now on, you know why.

Anyway, don't miss this one (link to transcript):

Following are excerpts from speeches by Arab Islamic leaders expressing solidarity with Gaza, which aired on Al-Manar and Al-Aqsa TV, December 3 and 5, 2008.

Sheik Himam Sa'id, Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan: "Oh noble Gaza, raise your head high. You have made the Muslims raise their heads high. And you, people of Hebron - you are now waging a war against the Jews. You are well-versed in this. We saw how, on a day in 1929, you slaughtered the Jews in Hebron. Today, slaughter them on the land of Hebron. Kill them in Palestine. Arise, oh people of Palestine, all the people of Palestine - arise in defense of your Al-Aqsa Mosque, arise in defense of Nablus and Hebron. Arise and face the [PA] Preventive Security forces. Fear them not, for they are rabbits. They are wolves, so fear them not, oh lions...

"Oh young men, what will you say to the Jordanian government? Expel the Jewish ambassador from Amman. Amman is pure, and the Jewish ambassador must not defile its soil. Recall the Jordanian ambassador from Palestine. Only mujahideen should be in Palestine - not ambassadors, not ministers, or any representative of this nation. Do not recognize the ambassador of this nation in Palestine. Palestine is the land of Jihad, of sacrifice, and of preparation. We say to this government: Stop normalization with the Jews. Stop all imports and exports with the Jews. Our markets are full of Jewish vegetables and Jewish fruits. Traders who bring these fruits and vegetables are traitors, collaborators. Tell them this. Make them hear our voice. The position of the religious scholars is that anyone who trades with the Jews is a traitor and collaborator."...

Of all the nations that have taken the floor in various venues at the United Nations, which one does General Assembly President, Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, take a stand against? UN General Assembly chief tries to block Israeli envoy's address

The President of the United Nations General Assembly tried to prevent Israel's ambassador, Professor Gabriela Shalev, from speaking at a special commemorative plenary session marking 60 years since the UN adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, scheduled for Wednesday.

The General Assembly President, Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann, tried to cancel speeches that were to be given by representatives of the unofficial regional group known as "Western European and others," after he learned that Israel's ambassador was to represent the group as its rotating chairman.

However, European representatives rejected the motion to cancel the meeting, and voiced outrage at his attempt to prevent the address.

In response, Brockmann announced that he would add a representative of the Arab bloc and a representative of unaffiliated nations, two blocs known to be hostile toward Israel, to the list of speakers at the session.

The event is expected to turn into a political debate in light of these changes.

Particularly ironic, considering that the Saudi Arabia, for one, opposed the original Declaration of Human Rights, and Muslim and Arab States have since composed their own Islamic Declaration of Human Rights as a substitute. Brockmann, however, has his own priorities.

A study suggests that the Hajj makes Muslim pilgrims more tolerant:

The pilgrimage that brings more than 2 million Muslims to Mecca every year tends to make them more religiously observant and also more tolerant, a huge study of Pakistani pilgrims suggests.

Muslims who undertake the hajj "return with more positive views towards people from other countries," are more likely to say "that people of different religions are equal," and are twice as likely as other religious Muslims to condemn Osama bin Laden, the study found...

Maybe the study sample missed the people who attended events like this:

...while most spent the day praying and reading Islam's holy book, the Quran, thousands -- mostly Iranians, Lebanese, Iraqis and Bahrainis -- held a rally inside their tents to denounce the United States and Israel.

Called the "disavowal of pagans ceremony," the Iranian-sponsored, anti-U.S. protest is held annually at the hajj, bringing a whiff of politics into what is otherwise an entirely religious event.

Saudi Arabia warned before the start of the pilgrimage that it would not tolerate any anti-U.S. demonstrations, but the rally was apparently permitted because it stayed inside the tents...

There are some very good tidbits in this PJM interview with Theodore Dalrymple. For instance:

BC: Why do we as a society automatically extend empathy and compassion to criminals rather than the victims of their crimes? There's a phrase that you use in this context: "a preference for barbarism." Why do our intellectuals rally to the cause of miscreants rather than that of good, honest citizens?

Dr. Dalrymple: Intellectuals need to say things that are not immediately obvious or do not occur to the man in the street. The man in the street instinctively sympathizes with the victim of crime; therefore, to distinguish himself from the man in the street, the intellectual has to sympathize with the criminal, by turning him into a victim of forces which only he, the intellectual, has sufficient sophistication to see...

And:

BC: In your essay, "The Roads to Serfdom," you refer to a famous quote by George Bernard Shaw, who said, "We are all socialists now." Are we all on the brink of becoming socialists once again? Why do you think, given the oppressive and pernicious nature of this method of governance, it remains politically viable?

Dr. Dalrymple: I think it more likely that there will be an increase in corporatism than in socialism. America will not be socialist, but it might be corporatist (there is always a tendency to this deformation in modern societies). You will find an increase in public spending with an increase in contracts given to businessmen with political contacts or who are politically pliable. Mr. Obama strikes me as a Blair figure rather than, say, a Leninist. This will lead to a swamp of corruption very difficult to eradicate because it will be legalized corruption, which is very hard to eliminate once started. An important thing to look for will be the corruption of statistics; for once they are corrupted, no one can know what is going on in the larger picture, and this gives carte blanche for the looting of the public purse by private interests linked to politicians, all in the name of procuring benefits for the public.

MEMRI TV: PLO Ambassador to Lebanon Abbas Zaki: We Consider the U.S to Be an Enemy Country

Following are excerpts from an interview with PLO Ambassador to Lebanon Abbas Zaki, which aired on OTV on November 7, 2008.

bbas Zaki: We consider the U.S. to be an enemy because its only strategic alliance is with Israel.

Interviewer: How could you possibly accept your enemy in your land?

Abbas Zaki: What do you mean? We meet even with Israel.

Interviewer: How can you consider Israel to be your enemy, if you signed a peace treaty with it?

Abbas Zaki: Allow me... This enemy... If I had the capabilities of the U.S. - would I be fighting it or negotiating with it?

Interviewer: Israel ceased being an enemy once you signed a peace treaty with it. I don't know how it could be your enemy. Do you talk to the Israelis as if they were your enemies? Do you talk to Israel as a friendly or enemy country?

Abbas Zaki: An enemy country, which owes us certain things. The heroic Vietnamese used to negotiate with the French, while they were slaughtering them.

Interviewer: I can assure you that in his speeches, Abu Mazen says the U.S. is a friendly country.

Abbas Zaki: Well, this isn't true. Perhaps Abu Mazen, in his position, needs to use diplomatic language, but he is the greatest critic of the U.S.

This is the truth and everyone knows it, yet PLO 'Ambassador' to the United States, Afif Safiyeh, is a regular guest at American forums, including appearances before Jewish groups. He doesn't usually say things like this, though.

I like that "If I had the capabilities of the U.S. - would I be fighting it or negotiating with it?"-bit (referring to Israel). Another truth. So since Israel has the capability it does compared to all the Palestinian Arab factions combined, should it, by this standard, be fighting or negotiating? Turnabout being fair play, after all.

A Vivid View: More than four centuries after the brilliant star explosion witnessed by Tycho Brahe and other astronomers of the era, NASA's Spitzer and Chandra space observatories and the Calar Alto observatory in Spain captured this image of the supernova remnant. This composite image combines infrared and X-ray observations. The explosion left a blazing hot cloud of expanding debris (green and yellow). The location of the blast's outer shock wave can be seen as a blue sphere of ultra-energetic electrons. Newly synthesized dust in the ejected material and heated pre-existing dust from the area around the supernova radiate at infrared wavelengths of 24 microns (red). Foreground and background stars in the image are white.

Political indoctrination in the universities? Don't be silly: A study claiming that the views of liberal professors don't influence their students deserves a big, red "F." Read it all, but here's a snip:

...I am sure that none of these professors would go so far as to browbeat her charges and tell students whom to vote for. What with camera phones and all, there might be some backwards homeschooled kid who might send the video to Fox News.

In the interests of scholarship, though, the instructor would feel duty-bound to inform her charges about the nefariousness of the Bush administration -- just as "facts" and background, mind you -- along with the long litany of criminal acts and attitudes of the West, particularly the United States. All that she would say in this vein, whether in the context of history or literature, would be backed up by the "factual" support in textbooks.

So when students participate in the "studies" cited in the New York Times article and are asked on a questionnaire whether their teachers attempt to impose their ideology, they will probably say no. Asked whether they are vulnerable to persuasion by professors' political views, today's college student, steeped in self-esteem and flattery about his abilities as a "critical thinker," is, of course, going to say that he came to his political views on his own, on the strength of the evidence before him and the critical powers of his own mind.

And this is the kind of interviewee a student reporter for the University of South Carolina's Daily Trojan will quote for a concluding salvo to a syndicated article about "the results of studies ... [that] refute the belief held by many conservatives that liberal college professors politically indoctrinate their students." Freshman Christopher James's assertion that "kids are way too smart to let themselves be swayed in one direction or the other" adds to the chorus of self-evident truth from desk seats in campuses across the country...

If I had a dime for every time I heard something along these lines...'Oh, the kids are way to smart to fall for that...' Yeah, right. Manipulators get excited when they hear students with this attitude. It makes their fangs water. This is perfect:

...As anyone who has dealt with the four-year-old who insists "I know how to do it!" understands, arrogance is inversely proportional to age...

Terrific response to a despicable piece posted at Engage: (a snip)

...It was Caroline Lucas who, unlike the Bihari migrant workers, happened on this occasion to be in the right place at the right time. Caroline Lucas, should the name mean nothing to you, is the elfin leader of the Green Party. But she could, as far as attributing the usual culpability is concerned, have been anyone at that end of British politics. Reader, I could have gone on the programme and said what she said for her. To wit, Iraq and Afghanistan prove we can't bring peace at the end of a gun (though it would seem that "understanding" can be found at the end of a terrorist's gun), many people see the "war on terror" as a war on Muslims (a point that fails to distinguish between what people choose to "see" and what is the truth of the matter), and, in her actual words, "if we are to defeat extremism we have to go to the root causes of it - we have to look in particular at countries like Palestine".

We are not unsubtle in this column. We understand that a simmering resentment will not always express itself rationally or fairly. In frustration, the angry often kill the wrong people in the wrong places. But to argue that Palestine fuelled the massacre at Mumbai, that the Hindu waiter shot in the forehead after serving water to a terrorist was paying for the inequities of Gaza, that he wasn't already, in the eyes of that terrorist, expendable enough as an unbeliever, as one who had stolen Kashmir, or simply as a spot of target practice en route to a mad and misguided martyrdom, is not only preposterous, it is irresponsible...

The rest, and don't miss the video of Jacobson from an earlier appearance at the bottom of the post if you haven't already seen it. [h/t: Adam Holland]

A brave and forthright piece in the Harvard paper by a Harvard undergraduate: Lessons From Mumbai - We've underestimated the threat of radical Islam

...Whenever terrorist attacks such as these are carried out (such generalizations can be made because they occur so frequently), pundits predictably exclaim that we must not allow hatred for Islam to fester, but rather, we must remind ourselves that terrorists represent a fringe movement and that tolerance should be extended to the rest of the Muslim world. A witch-hunt may not be in order, but there is no question that the attacks in Mumbai were fueled by the Muslim fanaticism that has grown so prevalent. The Wall Street Journal reported that as two gunmen poised to fire at a dozen people in Mumbai's Oberoi Hotel, two hostages screamed out that they were Turkish Muslims. Hearing this, the gunmen spared their lives and killed everyone else.

Islam is not a wholly extremist religion, nor is any religion free of extremists who commit atrocities in the name of faith. American Klan members committed crimes against blacks in the supposed name of Christianity. Harvard is filled with Muslim students with mainstream politics. Yet outside of well-educated communities like ours, this is not the case. Islam has come to possess more extremist members than any other modern religion...

You can almost hear the author (Lucy Caldwell) hedging in that second paragraph and trying to stave off the inevitable counter-attack. It doesn't help (as the comment thread shows).

Cinnamon Stillwell has a nice profile piece on Columbia's resident propagandist and ex-PLO spokesman that includes a little shout out to this blog: Rashid Khalidi, Campus Watch & Middle East Studies

...In Khalidi's opinion, even justifiable Western intervention must be opposed, while all misdeeds on the part of Arab leadership must be whitewashed. Despite the fact that he is a specialist in Palestinian history, Khalidi fails to address the internecine Palestinian conflict between Hamas and Fatah; doing so would break his relentless focus on Israel and the U.S. as the sources of all that ails the Middle East. When cornered on the subject, Khalidi unsurprisingly blames the West.

To push this false narrative, Khalidi has at times erred grievously. "Solomonia" blogger Martin Solomon pointed to a 2006 appearance on PBS's "NewsHour with Margaret Warner" in which Khalidi claimed that neither Hezbollah nor Hamas is a "direct threat to the United States." He tried to explain away Hezbollah's 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, which killed 241 American military personnel, claiming that U.S. peacekeeping forces were an invading army that could be opposed justifiably.

Khalidi also claimed that, "Hamas, as far as I know, and as far as I've seen, has never attacked America, the United States, or Americans." In fact, as Solomon noted, there have been scores of American victims of Palestinian terrorism, both before and after the founding of Hamas, evidenced by numerous lawsuits stemming from such incidents...

MEMRI TV: Children Recite Messages of Hate in Iranian Demonstrations

Following are excerpts from a program about Iranian children in the "Jerusalem Day" parade. The program aired on Jaam-e Jam 1 TV on September 25, 2008.

...Interviewer: What's your boy's name, and how old is he?

Father: Soheil is one year old.

Interviewer: Why did you bring him along?

Father: In order to inject into his blood loathing for Israel from an early age.

Interviewer: Well done. Well done. What do you think is the greatest desire of the honorable people who gathered to join the parade marking International Jerusalem Day?

Father: Their greatest desires are the annihilation of Israel and the appearance of the Mahdi....

...Interviewer: What's your name, my boy?

Mohammad: Mohammad.

Interviewer: [Your sign says]: "Death to Israel." Why did you come here today?

Mohammad: In order to...

Interviewer: To say "Death to Israel"? Go ahead.

Mohammad: "Death to Israel."

Interviewer: Well done. It's very interesting that little children, like this girl and this boy, are already experiencing the culture of unity and solidarity, alongside their parents and fellow citizens....

...Interviewer: I found it very nice to meet a six-year-old girl called Rihaneh, who drew a picture about Jerusalem and the Palestinian people, and about how the defenseless Palestinian people defends itself. In it, we see a Palestinian soldier... or actually, a Palestinian youth, holding a weapon in his hands and firing at a tank of the plundering Israel. The Israeli tank is firing toward the young Palestinian. Rest assured that the blood of the martyrs, the efforts of the young Palestinians, and the support of the Muslims worldwide for the Palestinian people will not be in vain.

Truthophobia indeed. Matthias Kuntzel on the latest misuse of language:

...First, while racism usually makes people "small" in order to enslave, exploit or expel them, anti-Semitism makes the Jews delusionally "big." The most important characteristic of anti-Semitism is a conspiracy theory that holds the Jews responsible for both capitalism and communism, for AIDS, revolutions and financial crises -- in short, for every "inexplicable" catastrophe of modernity.

The concept of "redemptive anti-Semitism," coined by Holocaust scholar Saul Friedländer, describes this phenomenon: If one assumes the Jews are responsible for all the world's misery, only their extermination can "redeem" the world. This paradigm of Jew hatred does not apply to racism. Muslims are not accused of pulling the strings behind all revolutions and wars.

Second, while we must reject any general suspicion of Muslims, it is impossible to ignore the fact that reservations about Muslims are based on real mass murder committed by some Muslims in the name of Islam. Events such as 9/11 or the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh have no counterpart in Jewish tradition.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is often used to explain Muslim hatred of Jews. But Israel's policies are not causing anti-Semitism. Rather, the way those policies are distorted and demonized in the Muslim world, and increasingly in Europe, is a new expression of this old hatred.

Third, one need not play down the extent of discrimination against Muslims in Europe to recognize that the effects of the "concept of the Muslim enemy" and the "concept of the Jewish enemy" are qualitatively different. No one wants to erase a Muslim country from the map the way some people threaten to do with the Jewish state. Islamic centers and houses of prayer need no permanent police protection in Europe, unlike Jewish sites. No satellite stations call for the extermination of Muslims, whereas Hezbollah and Hamas TV, for example, broadcast via Arab satellites into European living rooms, regularly call for the destruction of the Jews -- even on children's programs.

In taking up the fashionable vocabulary of Islamophobia and equating hostility to Muslims with hostility to Jews, the center also risks undermining the most important current task in dealing with anti-Semitism: studying and fighting hostility to Jews in the Islamic world, where anti-Semitism has reached an unprecedented level...

Columbia doesn't want ROTC, but they don't mind serving as a hub of apologia for Islamism -- one of the world's most regressive and anti-gay forces. In any case, the author, a Columbia student, has exactly the formula for getting homosexuals accepted by straight society and moving policies like 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' into obsolescence -- forget the 'Gay Pride' freak shows, and demonstrate that gays are simply another part of a functioning society: Why Columbia Should Welcome ROTC - Bad policy on gays is not a good reason for a ban

Update: This post picked up at the Advocates for ROTC site.

Bret Stephens on the obvious, including an Al-Dura reference: Media Narratives Feed Terrorist Fantasies

For purposes of self-justification, Azam Amir Kasab, the only terrorist taken alive in last week's Mumbai massacre, offered that the murder of Jews in the city's Chabad House was undertaken to avenge Israeli atrocities on Palestinians. Two other terrorists cited instances of anti-Muslim Hindu violence as the answer to the question, "Why are you doing this to us?" before mowing down 14 unarmed people at the Oberoi Hotel. And if dead terrorists could talk, we would surely hear Abu Ghraib mentioned as among their reasons for singling out U.S. and British hostages.

One suspects the terrorists spent far too much time listening to the BBC World Service.

Let's hasten to add that by no means should the BBC alone be singled out. When it comes to terrorists and their grievances, nearly all the Western media have provided them with a rich diet on which to feed.

In the spring of 2005, Newsweek ran with a thinly sourced item about the Quran being flushed down a Guantanamo toilet. Result: At least 15 people were killed in Afghan riots.

Newsweek later retracted the story, which was the right thing to do but also, in its way, exceptional. Compare that to the refusal of French reporter Charles Enderlin and his station, France 2, to retract or even express doubt about his September 2000 report on Mohammed al-Durrah, the 12-year-old Palestinian boy allegedly killed by Israeli soldiers during an exchange of gunfire in the Gaza Strip -- an exchange Mr. Enderlin did not witness.

In an exhaustive piece in the June 2003 issue of the Atlantic, James Fallows observed that the evidence that the boy could not have been shot by an Israeli bullet is overwhelming, while the evidence that the entire incident was staged is, at the very least, impressive. In France, the story has been the subject of various lawsuits. In Israel, however, and throughout the Muslim world, Durrah became the poster child for a five-year intifada that took several thousand lives...

Meant to note this one a couple of weeks ago:

Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., has hired six students whose jobs as "dialogue facilitators" will involve intervening in conversations among students in dining halls and common rooms to encourage discussion of such social justice issues as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability and social class.

"If there's a teachable moment, we'll take it," said assistant dean of student affairs Arig Girgrah, who runs the program. "A lot of community building happens around food and dining."

She gave the example of a conversation about a gay character on television as a good example of such a moment...

Life is just full of such 'moments,' especially when your overlords are watching. One wonders what the consequences would be for someone who told the 'facilitator' to mind his own business.

In "The dangerous illusion of independent terrorists" Greg Sheridan, Foreign Editor of the Australian, writes:

WHEN US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was in India this week, all the talk was about "non-state actors" and the challenge they throw up to the international system. The assumption was that the Pakistan-based terrorists responsible for the murders of about 175 people in Mumbai, and the injuries to hundreds more, were non-state actors.

Yet it may be that since the 9/11 attacks in New York, the world has completely misconceived the age of terror.

The radical increase in the lethality, range, political consequence and strategic influence of terrorists comes not from their being non-state actors at all. Instead it comes from their being sponsored by states...

..Terrorists have to operate from somewhere. There are three alternatives. They can operate in what is truly ungoverned space, such as much of contemporary Somalia. Or they can operate clandestinely, against the wishes of a governing authority, as say the terrorist groups that have gathered in London. But of necessity such operations tend to be small and furtive. It is the third option that allows terrorists to grow to their full potential: where they are operating as either allies or agents of a sympathetic government.

Which brings us to Mumbai....

...Even if the impotent Pakistani civilian Government was not directly involved in the Mumbai massacres, it makes sense to see the long campaign of terror against India as sponsored by at least part of the Pakistani state. Given the Pakistani state also pioneered the idea of the Islamic nuclear bomb, this should sound the gravest alerts.

Thus it may be that modern terrorism is not so much the emergence of non-state actors on to the strategic field but, rather, the latest refinement of state power, giving the option of state military and terrorist action with plausible, or at least politically useful, deniability. If anything, therefore, we have tended to underestimate the strategic importance of terrorism.

Alan Sullivan notes that the same thing can be said of the al Qaeda/Saudi Arabia connection

Al Qaeda makes no secret of its ambition to supplant the Saudi monarchy. Nevertheless it is supported by a Wahhabi power-base in the desert kingdom.

Most Westerners seem incapable -- or afraid -- of comprehending these links. Bill Roggio and Thomas Jocelyn, however, make a very compelling case against Pakistan. It's a start. But they close by posing the situation as a dilemma: "Pakistan is both an ally and an enemy." No, Pakistan is simply an enemy; and so is Saudi Arabia, which has been the financial and ideological corrupter of Pakistan..

Most media and government types are still doing their level best to ignore Saudi involvement in terrorism, but they are starting to pay attention to Pakistan. Pakistani intelligence has been openly been sponsoring terrorism for years, but very few made the connection as openly as they're doing now.

Before the Mumbai attacks, the media, government officials and UN types were willing to look the other way, to tolerate the use of terrorist proxies to fight dirty little wars against nations like India and Israel. The use of terrorist proxies was always seen as a safer alternative than open war between nation-states.

The attacks in Mumbai may be more frightening to many than 9/11 because the Mumbai attacks do have the possibility of leading to a confrontation between two nuclear-armed states. This possibility may force everyone to question alliances with (and tolerance of) states that use terrorist militias to gain power and lebensraum.

In "Nature, Nuisance or Worse?", Peggy Orenstein writes:

"Awww," my 5-year-old daughter would say, catching sight of a tom on our way to the playground, "isn't he cute?" We would pretend we lived in some distant past, that we were the first humans to set foot on this land. That is, until the day we rounded a bend to find a gang of fowl marauders glaring at us as if to say, "What are you looking at, pal?" The birds had a good three inches on my girl. I stepped between her and them, and with a bright, "It's O.K., honey," which fooled neither avian nor child, hurried past.

Since then, we've taken a different route to the swings.

It's only a matter of time before the turkeys complete the circuit from novelty to nuisance. Until they become like the deer who ate $300 worth of landscaping. Or the geese who have turned jogging around a nearby lake into a trip through a sewer. Or worse: in October a raccoon slid open a screen door of a house across the street, jumped up on the bed where my neighbor was napping with her newborn son and bit her. Although we haven't had the rabies outbreaks that are common in the East, the nursing mother had to endure a series of injections just in case.

She concludes that the solution should come from above

As much as I would like to wring the birds' necks, I'm not a homesteader. Not even close. I'm a middle-class, coast-dwelling, urban lady prone to hives when I brush against anything green -- exactly the sort, according to a classic study by Stephen Kellert, a professor of social ecology at Yale University, who most abhors hunting....So what to do? I find myself sympathizing (almost) with Sarah Palin -- Sarah Palin! -- who encourages Alaskans to gun down wolves from helicopters.

What does firing on wolves from helicopters have to do with rambling raccoons and fussy turkeys?

I have to wonder - doesn't anyone take their kids on camping trips anymore? Learning how to deal with animals and green stuff, learning how to light a campfire, set up a tent, paddle a boat and hike through the woods gives urban kids a sense of usefulness and accomplishment that they don't get at home. Some even learn how to say 'shoo' (and mean it) to walking foodstuffs who taste good with gravy.

When they're over 10, they can even learn how to fire their Daisy Red Ryder air rifle - without shooting an eye out.

Another victory in the use of money to combat terror:

CHICAGO (AP) -- A federal appeals court upheld a $156 million judgment Wednesday against three U.S.-based Islamic groups accused of bankrolling terrorism in a landmark civil case.

The U.S. charities must be held liable if they gave money to groups that engage in terrorist acts, even if they designated the funds were for humanitarian purposes, the decision by the 10 judges on the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals said.

The suit was filed in 2000 by the parents of American-born David Boim, who was a 17-year-old yeshiva student when he was killed by Hamas terrorists in a 1996 drive-by shooting at a bus stop on Israel's West Bank. The Boims' lawsuit claimed the groups that gave to Palestinian charities ultimately helped fund terrorism.

"This is the most significant judicial opinion on liability for terrorist financing ever decided by a United States court," said Chicago attorney Stephen Landes, who represented Boim's parents.

The decision upheld a lower-court judgment against the American Muslim Society, the Islamic Association for Palestine-National and the Quranic Literacy Institute.

The appeals court also sent civil allegations against a fourth charity -- the Texas-based Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development -- back to U.S. District Court for a decision on whether it should have to pay part of the $156 million...

For the record, JTA reports that earlier reports of the Chabad victims being tortured before being murdered were not correct:

The Jewish victims from the Mumbai Chabad House siege showed no indications of torture, a Mumbai doctor said.

Dr. Ganjanan Chawan saw the bodies when they arrived at JJ Hospital in Mumbai.

His statements in Wednesday's edition of the Jerusalem Post contradicted an interview with a morgue employee of the hospital printed the previous day by the newspaper. The morgue employee had said the Jewish victims had more injuries than the other victims in last week's terrorist attacks on the Indian city. More than 180 people were killed...

An important press release from Citizens for Peace and Tolerance:

Boston, Mass.

Texas Terrorism Trial Ties Boston mosque leaders to Extremist Network

Dennis Hale, President of Citizens for Peace and Tolerance, called today for a public investigation of the Boston Redevelopment Authority's sale of land to the Islamic Society of Boston (ISB) for the construction of New England's largest mosque.

Hale noted that officers of the largest Muslim charity in America, The Holy Land Foundation (HLF), convicted in Texas last week of funding Middle East terrorism, have ties to the ISB and its close affiliate, the Muslim American Society. "The convictions in Texas are a victory in the government's efforts to prevent charities from being used to support terrorism," said Hale. The Holy Land Foundation and five of its organizers were convicted for sending more than $12 million to the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas. "It is shocking to discover the ties between the HLF and the leadership of the Islamic Society of Boston," said Hale.

Hale enumerated the ties:

  • "Hossam Al Jabri, President of the Muslim American Society's Boston branch (MAS Boston), which now controls the ISB Cultural Center, personally donated money to the HLF while they were sending funds to Hamas," Hale said. "And the Islamic Society of Boston as an organization sent thousands of dollars to the HLF as well."
  • "Jamal Badawi, an ISB Trustee, was a frequent speaker at HLF fundraising events, and was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in the HLF prosecution."
  • "Osama Kandil, the ISB Board Chairman, founded the Muslim Arab Youth Association (MAYA), which provided venues for HLF fundraising events where Hamas members made explicit calls to murder Israelis." For its role in Hamas fundraising, MAYA was also listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in the HLF trial.

"Now," Hale continued, "the mosque, which was built by the Islamic Society of Boston, has been taken over by the Muslim American Society (MAS). MAS was founded by top Muslim Brotherhood leaders and states that it is guided by Muslim Brotherhood ideology. The Brotherhood inspires and provides the justification for the anti-West Jihad." Hale cited a document from the HLF investigation, which describes the Muslim Brotherhood's goal in America as a "Grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying Western Civilization from within." Hale noted that "this same document praises the contribution of ISB Trustee Jamal Badawi to the Muslim Brotherhood's efforts."

"And finally," Hale said, "the Boston Phoenix published last week an expose, 'Menino's Mosque,' which shows that the BRA did not perform due diligence when it approved the sale to the ISB of public property at a steep discount for the construction of a mosque financed mostly by Saudi Arabia. The Mayor intended to help a group of local African American Muslims build a house of worship. Instead, he wound up giving the mosque to a group controlled and financed by the Saudis,Boston Phoenix Hale said. Boston PhoenixThe BRA role is further complicated,Boston Phoenix according to Hale, Boston Phoenixby the role of Muhammad Ali-Salaam, an official of the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA), who was also an ISB member and fundraiser for the mosque. The BRA recently told a judge that their records on the ISB matter have 'disappeared.' Today we call upon the FinCom's chairman, Paul Minihane, and its Executive Director, Jeff Conley, to initiate a long overdue investigation into the conduct of the BRA."

CPT is an interfaith citizens group. It was sued by the ISB for "defamation" after asking questions about the radical leadership of the ISB in 2004, based on news reports that the founder of the ISB, Abdulrahman Alamoudi, was serving a 23-year prison term for a terrorist conspiracy and fund-raising for Al-Qaeda, and that an original ISB Trustee, Yusuf al Qaradawi, was calling for the wholesale murder of Jews and homosexuals, and is now barred from entering the U.S. Also sued were the Boston Herald, Fox 25, and over a dozen individuals and organizations. The ISB dropped its lawsuit in 2007.

India has asked Pakistan to hand over 20 fugitives from Indian law who it believes are settled in Pakistan.

Alan Sullivan believes that India may be constructing a casus belli

[Karachi] is also the home of a key figure named for extradition by India in the Bombay attack. He will be safe there. Islamabad has no more authority than it does in Quetta, the northwestern stronghold of Taliban.

Demanding the twenty "fugitives" -- all influential men in Pakistan -- India knows perfectly well that the Islamabad government cannot comply. This is a pressure tactic, the sort of thing one does when constructing a casus belli. Many observers think Indian inertia will prevail. I am not so sure.

I hope this isn't going to be used as an excuse to start another bumbleheaded war like Israel vs. Hezbollah in July 2006.

These 'influential' supporters of Islamist terrorism are enemy combatants, and are therefore legitimate targets of war. Since they're influential, their whereabouts and their daily schedules are pretty easy to find. Unlike the terrorists they support, they're fairly vulnerable. A small, well trained army of un-uniformed professionals, armed with anything from long-range rifles to poisoned umbrellas could probably remove the "twenty fugitive" problem within a week. Without collateral damage.

Prosperous nations have become over-reliant on huge military forces and bombs. No matter how smart they are, they're not always efficient or effective in a terrorist/proxy war. We all need to re-learn the tactics America taught the world back in 1776.

There is this: Muslim organisations deny burial to slain terrorists

A grieving Mumbai mourns the dead. At least 179 Indians and foreign nationals were gunned down in cold blood in a terrorist attack that has raised controversy and several questions.

And now questions are being raised over the fate of those nine men who unleashed the carnage and were gunned by the security forces.

Muslim organisations in Mumbai have decided that Muslim cemeteries in Mumbai, where unclaimed bodies are usually buried, will not open its doors for the last rites of these urban jehadis.

"The killing of innocents is against Islam. They are bringing shame to 25
crore Muslims of India. These men are not Muslims. Why should we give them place anywhere? There is no place for them in our hearts and in our cemeteries," said Hamid Abdul Razzak, president, Dawat-e-islami.

Unprecedented events demand an unprecedented response. And this time the community has gone beyond merely condemning terrorism. It's shutting its doors on those who claim to act in their name.

Determined to deny the terrorists the martyrdom they seek, Muslim organisations have written to senior Mumbai police officials as well.

"The cemetery should not allow the police to bury the nine dead terrorists in their premises," said Ibrahim Tai, president, Muslim Council Trust...

Dennis Prager makes the point that the Mumbai terrorists did it for the same reason that Hitler wasted resources killing Jews in the waning days of the War -- murdering Jews is a core value: The Rabbi and the Terrorists

... Why would a terrorist group of Islamists from Pakistan whose primary goal is to have Pakistan gain control of the third of Kashmir that belongs to India and therefore aimed to destabilize Indias major city devote so much of its efforts -- 20 percent of its force of 10 gunmen whose stated goal was to kill 5,000 -- to killing a rabbi and any Jews with him?

The question echoes one from World War II: Why did Hitler devote so much time, money, and manpower in order to murder every Jewish man, woman, and child in every country the Nazis occupied? Why did Hitler -- as documented by the late historian Lucy Dawidowicz in her aptly named book The War against the Jews -- weaken the Nazi war effort by diverting money, troops, and military vehicles from fighting the Allies to rounding up Jews and shipping them to death camps?

From the perspective of political scientists, historians, and contemporary journalists, the answer to these questions is not rational. But the non-rationality of an answer is not synonymous with its non-validity.

For the Islamists, as for the Nazis, the destruction of the Jews -- and since 1948, the Jewish state -- is central to their worldview...

... To reinforce my point, imagine a Basque separatist terrorist organization attacking Madrid. Would the terrorists take time out to murder all those in the Madrid Chabad House? The idea is ludicrous. But no one seems to find it odd that that Pakistani Muslim terrorists who hate India and want it to give up control of Indian Kashmir would send two of its 10 terrorists to kill perhaps the only rabbi in Mumbai. As Newsweek reported during the siege, Given that Orthodox Jews were being held at gunpoint by mujahideen (sic), it seemed unlikely there would be survivors. Newsweek, like just about everyone else, simply assumes Islamists will murder Jews whenever and wherever possible.

They are right.

For years I have warned that great evils often begin with the murder of Jews, and therefore non-Jews who dismiss Jew-hatred (aka anti-Semitism, aka anti-Zionism), will learn too late that Jew- and Israel-haters only begin with Jews but never end with them. When Israeli Jews were almost the only targets of Muslim terrorists, the world dismissed it as a Jewish or Israeli problem. Then it became an American and European and Filipino and Thai and Indonesian and Hindu problem...

Are you kidding me? The UN is a vile, corrupt institution based on a flawed premise, as Claudia Rosett ably lays out, so how can we possibly consider making that institution in effect an integral part of our own government? Can anyone possibly believe that this administration intends to stand up to the UN, or will we start down our appeasement path? And now we see that the proposed nominee is all for sacrificing American lives everywhere that American interests are questionable at best -- just as Obama promised during the debates, with a laundry-list of conflicts he'd use American armed force -- everywhere except, of course, where Americans had already been fighting, namely Iraq.

Word is out that President-elect Obama will nominate his close adviser, Susan Rice, as ambassador to the UN, and dignify both the institution and Rice by exalting the post to cabinet rank.

This is a trainwreck waiting to happen -- the main question being whether, when the train goes off the rails, Rice will be trying to drive the UN engine, or hanging on for dear life to the caboose. Oh -- and the other big question being just how much a bigger role for the UN will cost the average American, not only in terms of money tossed down the UN spiderholes, but also in terms of lives endangered, damage to the American economy, freedom curtailed, and support to those who would inflict on the U.S. the kind of carnage we have just witnessed in Bombay.

Multiple reports say that Rice is haunted by the Rwanda genocide, which took place in 1994 while she was handling the Africa portfolio for the Clinton administration National Security Council. In concert with the UN, where Kofi Annan was then head of peacekeeping, the U.S. sat it out. Hundreds of thousands were slaughtered. Since then, Rice has vowed "If I ever faced such a crisis again, I would come down on the side of dramatic action, going down in flames if that was required."...

The rest.

MEMRI TV: Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad Decorates Released Terrorist Samir Al-Kuntar

Following is an excerpt from a TV report on Syrian President Bashar Al-Assas honoring released terrorist Samir Al-Kuntar, which aired on Syrian TV on November 24, 2008:

Anchor: President Bashar Al-Assad awarded released Lebanese prisoner Samir Al-Kuntar the Syrian decoration of the highest degree, out of appreciation for his record in the struggle, for his steadfastness, and for his patriotic and pan-Arab positions. President Al-Assad, who met with Samir Al-Kuntar and his brother Bassam, said that Al-Kuntar was not only the leader of the prisoners, but was also the leader among honorable free men, and that his adherence to Arab rights, despite all that he has been through, has made him a symbol of the struggle and freedom in Arab countries and throughout the world.

Al-Kuntar said he was happy and honored to meet the president and to be decorated by him. He added that the brave positions of Syria, under the leadership of President Al-Assad, and Al-Assad's constant support for the honorable resistance and his rejection of any unjust settlement constitutes a pillar of support for the people of the resistance and free men. This helps the prisoners to remain steadfast, despite their plight in the prisons of the Israeli occupation.

Worth emphasizing (for the Deepak Chopras of the world): Doctors shocked at hostages' torture

...Doctors working in a hospital where all the bodies, including that of the terrorists, were taken said they had not seen anything like this in their lives.

"Bombay has a long history of terror. I have seen bodies of riot victims, gang war and previous terror attacks like bomb blasts. But this was entirely different. It was shocking and disturbing," a doctor said.

Asked what was different about the victims of the incident, another doctor said: "It was very strange. I have seen so many dead bodies in my life, and was yet traumatised. A bomb blast victim's body might have been torn apart and could be a very disturbing sight. But the bodies of the victims in this attack bore such signs about the kind of violence of urban warfare that I am still unable to put my thoughts to words," he said.

Asked specifically if he was talking of torture marks, he said: "It was apparent that most of the dead were tortured. What shocked me were the telltale signs showing clearly how the hostages were executed in cold blood," one doctor said.

The other doctor, who had also conducted the post-mortem of the victims, said: "Of all the bodies, the Israeli victims bore the maximum torture marks. It was clear that they were killed on the 26th itself. It was obvious that they were tied up and tortured before they were killed. It was so bad that I do not want to go over the details even in my head again," he said.

Corroborating the doctors' claims about torture was the information that the Intelligence Bureau had about the terror plan. "During his interrogation, Ajmal Kamal said they were specifically asked to target the foreigners, especially the Israelis," an IB source said...

Here's an indicator that democracy -- that is, the trappings of voting only -- by itself, is insufficient. It takes time to build a free society with a free exchange of ideas that can lay the groundwork for a healthy democracy to flourish. Without that, you just have the same manipulative ideas being pushed by a different set of demagogues. In some societies it may take longer than others: Egypt's Jew Haters Deserve Ostracism in the West - More proof the prejudice has nothing to do with Israel. After pointing out that the "liberal" Egyptian parties are shot through with the same Jew hatred the rest of Egyptian society is shot through with (we get the leaders we deserve, after all), author Amr Bargisi writes:

...These examples are especially notable because they have nothing to do with Israel or Zionism. They expose the falsehood -- popular with prominent scholars like John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, authors of last year's best-selling book "The Israel Lobby" -- that hatred of Jews is not one of the great motivating factors in the Arab world's overall objections to Israel.

But these examples also raise a serious question about what passes for liberalism in the Arab world. Why bother listening to these voices on matters of economics -- much less politics, democracy or human rights -- if they also propagate hateful conspiracy theories?

There's another question: Over the past eight years, the United States has invested huge resources in attempting to bring democracy to the Middle East. But it's not clear whether that project will succeed as long as America's natural allies in the region remain themselves so profoundly irrational and illiberal.

What can be done? Here's a modest suggestion. The Egyptian state and the country's newspapers go out of their way to make a leper of any author who expresses even remote sympathy with Israel. Perhaps Western institutions could adopt a similar practice, refusing to invite to their various functions any editors who allow their pages to become Jew-hatred platforms. The cold shoulder alone might get these lunch-eaters to change their tune.

Deepak Chopra, mush head: Deepak Blames America - The media look within to explain the sick delusions of the Mumbai killers.

...Soon enough, there was Deepak Chopra, healer, New Age philosopher and digestion guru, advocate of aromatherapy and regular enemas, holding forth on CNN on the meaning of the attacks.

How the ebullient Dr. Chopra had come to be chosen as an authority on terror remains something of a mystery, though the answer may have something to do with his emergence in the recent presidential campaign as a thinker of advanced political views. Also commending him, perhaps, is his well known capacity to cut through all sorts of complexities to make matters simple. No one can fail to grasp the wisdom of a man who has informed us that "If you have happy thoughts, then you make happy molecules."

In his CNN interview, he was no less clear. What happened in Mumbai, he told the interviewer, was a product of the U.S. war on terrorism, that "our policies, our foreign policies" had alienated the Muslim population, that we had "gone after the wrong people" and inflamed moderates. And "that inflammation then gets organized and appears as this disaster in Bombay."...

It is the defining characteristic of the New Age poppycock that the answers to all our ills can be found in the mirror. This is a kind of tolerable stupidity when you're talking about selling crappy books to gullible college students, but it's a bit more irksome when there's actual blood and guts on the floor.

Charles Jacobs in this week's Jewish Advocate on the Boston Saudi-funded mosque (in full): Menino's Mosque:

This was the title of the Boston Phoenix's lead story last week, featuring on the cover an image of Mayor Menino serving up a new mosque on a silver platter to --- the story argues -- exactly the wrong people.

The Phoenix report is the first public account of how a well intentioned Mayor tried to help local African-American Muslims in Roxbury build a mosque, but wound up subsidizing what many in Boston worry is a Saudi-funded and controlled center with connections to radical Islam --- a mile from downtown.

Phoenix reporter David Bernstein sketches a complex tale of good intentions gone awry. At the center of Bernstein's account is Muhammad Ali-Salaam, who played a double role: as promoter and fundraiser for the mosque, while being paid as a city official to guard Boston's interests.

Twenty years ago, Bernstein says, the Muslim Council of Boston (MCB), a consortium of Sunni congregations in Roxbury, proposed to build a mosque on land held by the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA). Mayor Ray Flynn was supportive. He had worked as a probation officer years before and came to know people at Roxbury's Intervale Street mosque who he thought "could do good for their community."

But in 1996, when it became clear that the MCB could not raise enough money, the BRA's Ali-Salaam put forward another group -- the Islamic Society of Boston (ISB) --- as the designated developers and helped the ISB get the $2 million dollar parcel for $175K.

Did the BRA ever vet the ISB? Bernstein describes ISB members as "largely of Saudi Arabian heritage." Simple due diligence would have found that Yusef al Quaradawi, then a registered ISB Trustee, called for the killing of Jews and homosexuals, that the ISB's website featured instructions on wife-beating, and that ISB Trustee Walid Fitahi called Jews the "murderers of prophets." Today, the ISB's founder is in prison as an al-Queda money runner. Even the BRA should know that a mosque that gets millions from the Saudis is unlikely to be an enthusiastic promoter of moderate Islam.

Now, Bernstein says, the Mayor hides from the issue in a "zone of silence," and doesn't show up at mosque events. The BRA, which is being sued to open its public records, seems to want the silence permanent: BRA officials recently told the judge that all relevant e-mails have disappeared.

At the height of the controversy over the leadership of the mosque, the ISB claimed that it had cleansed itself of objectionable characters. Fitahi actually resigned from the ISB board. But now, Bernstein tells us, Fitahi is back.

And Bernstein reports that the ISB recently turned the mosque over to the Muslim American Society (MAS). This is a group thought by some to be the American branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, sparked and now may guide the anti-West jihad.

Has the BRA put the mayor in an untenable position? Has the time come for a FinCom investigation of the BRA/ISB/MAS deal?
