So states the subtitle of Andrew McCarthy's excellent NRO piece: Suborned in the U.S.A.. I really recommend reading the whole thing as it's awfully difficult to excerpt, but here's a taste:
...the real question is: Why don't the media -- the watchdog legions who trekked to Sarah Palin's Alaska hometown to scour for every kernel of gossip, and who were so desperate for Bush dirt that they ran with palpably forged military records -- want to dig into Obama's background?
Who cares that Hawaii's full state records would doubtless confirm what we already know about Obama's birthplace? They would also reveal interesting facts about Obama's life: the delivering doctor, how his parents described themselves, which of them provided the pertinent information, etc. Wasn't the press once in the business of interesting -- and even not-so-interesting -- news?
And why would Obama not welcome Hawaii's release of any record in its possession about the facts and circumstances of his birth? Isn't that kind of weird? It would, after all, make the whole issue go away and, if there's nothing there, make those who've obsessed over it look like fools. Why should I need any better reason to be curious than Obama's odd resistance to so obvious a resolution?...
The story is about Obama's ease with the lie, his complete lack of transparency, and the media's utter, complete, and total falling down on the job.

I am sure that he would be delighted to release the original. He CANNOT. He hasn't got a copy. He asked Hawaii to send him a copy of the original, and Hawaii sent him the same document it sends to everyone, the Certification of Live Birth. So, it is Hawaii, under a Republican governor, that is preventing the release of the original birth certificate. The certification of live birth is the legal birth certificate of Hawaii, and the location of birth has been confirmed by two Hawaiian officials, and in 1961 when Obama was born Hawaii did not register foreign births.
So the original birth certificate must show that he was born in Hawaii. So, why doesn't Obama show the original? Because Hawaii will not send it to him.
Sorry, but I don't believe it.
If a birth certificate exists in Hawaii for Barack Obama, that they would not show it to him -- not merely the owner of the certificate, but the sitting President of the United States -- staggers the imagination.
The man can ask for any CIA file he wants, and it will be brought by courier to his desk. He has the full resources of the government of the United States of America at his disposal. And some third-rate Hawaii bureaucrat won't let him see his own birth certificate?
Yes, I've read the Kokua Line article. It quotes one Hawaiian official. Others have seen the specific CLB for President Obama, and have incredulously remarked that it could not have come from the official sources.
So the issue is not simple, and it is not closed.

commenter smrstrauss, is making a claim unsubstantiated by Obama or anyone in Hawaii: that Obama himself asked Hawaii to send him a Certificate (not Certification) of Live Birth. Not only has no official claimed this, but Hawaii has refused to confirm the source of the purported copy (actually there have been a few differing ones) of the Certification of Live Birth (COLB) Obama has put on the internet at different times, which cooincidentally first appeared after a commenter from Daily Kos sent what he later admitted was a forged one to Obama as a joke.
All the talk about birth certificates notwithstanding, the real issue of us "birthers" is not whether Obama is merely a citizen (that's what Obama *wants* the public to think, thus all the hype about a certificate -- he *wants* that, b/c of course a long form can be forged & produced) -- but our issue, the issue being challenged in lawsuits, is that Obama is definitely not a *natural born* citizen -- that is the Constitutional (Art 2, Sec 1, Cl 5) requirement. That is why you'll see such crafty language from Fukino saying something close, yet not the legal term: "natural-born American citizen". Obama by his own admission was British at birth & one of his parents is not a US citizen. He loses, ineligible, just gotta get the case past procedural hurdles to a hearing on the mertis in front of an impartial judge. Ideally, he should be removed by Congress by Quo Warranto.
I hate to disagree but you are mistaken .It was common pratice to accept and issue C.O.L.B.'s to anyone borned outside of Hawaii,who ask and in some cases you weren't even required to be present .You just had to contact a govt.offical and request one,Obama's could be a BC1,BC2,or a BC3,this is why Obama won't release his because he would have to explain how he got his BC2 or BC3.The real problem Obama has is his Lack of honesty and "Transparenticy"His refuseal to release all his records like "EVERY PRESIDENT" who has run for the position he holds has "Gladly" released his records.the only thing Obama released was a 6 line paragraph of his medical records,When they ask McCain he released 1500pages?That's "Transparenticy"His story keeps changing.Even his books he wrote isn't accurate,he has told so many lies we have to know all about this man who has lied to the people who gave him his job.I ask anyone of you,If you had a job and you was caught in serveral serious lies to your boss?How long do you think you or I would have this job.If he as a president ran on "Transparenticy" and won't even release his school records,He's hiding more than his place of birth.He as a president had a chance to come clean instead he hired lawyers to continue fighting the release of his records.That's the problem.The birthers just have the balls to question your Oreo Messiah?We the people have a right to know who we hired for the job he has a repondsiblity to his employers to submit any and all records to put this issue to rest?SIMPLE HUH?

Not true. At the time of Obama's birth ONLY people born in Hawaii could have their births registered in Hawaii. The ability of parents to register their children even if the children were born outside of Hawaii, did not come along until 1982--more than twenty years after Obama was born.
Moreover, there is evidence that the Hawaii authorities required evidence of birth in Hawaii if the child was not born in a hospital, and Obama was born in a hospital. They required a sworn statement by the doctor or midwife that they were present at the birth and that the birth occurred in Hawaii. For children born without any care, such as those who are born in taxis on the way to the hospital, they required the statement of some other witness, such as the taxi driver.
The two State officials who looked into Obama's file and said that they found an original birth certificate in it were not Democrats. They were officials in the administration of a Republican governor, and yet they repeatedly confirmed that Obama was born in Hawaii. YES, the statement that there is an original in the file is a statement that Obama was born in Hawaii, as the spokeswoman for the department told the Chicago Tribune. That's not what I said. I said he asked for a copy of his birth certificate, and Hawaii sent him the Certification. If he had asked for the original, he would have gotten the Certification. If he asked for a certificate, he would have gotten the Certification. Everyone who asks for a birth certificate in Hawaii gets the Certification. That is all that Hawaii sends out.
