Jeffrey Goldberg, declaring a moratorium on responding to the ranting of Andrew Sullivan, also makes this remark:
...There is another benefit to disengagement. As Goldblog readers know, I'm deeply distressed by many currents in Israeli society and politics, the continuing, disproportionate power of the settlement movement being chief among my concerns. But I find myself hesitant to criticize Israel these days because my words are inevitably used by people who don't have Israel's best interests, or the best interests of American Jews, at heart. So I want to find a new way to write about these issues...
Well, that becoming attitude is what separates mainstream left commentators like Goldberg from the nuts on extreme.
I am hesitant to criticize the US or Western Civilization for similar reasons.
Well I read the whole piece and under the circumstances I can't blame him for not wanting to play this game any longer.
He makes a critical point, which is, agitprop hurts real people.
By the same token, the magazine bears some responsibility here. It is one thing to toss garbage like that around in the dungeons of the internet but another think for a msm blog to publish it.
I'm discouraged. I have spent so many years of my own life arguing with ideologues and people who just plain make s*** up and it's becoming mainstream now.
Sorry, but this wasn't evident some time ago, re, Sullivan as applied to any number of subjects, certainly so as applied to Israel?
Israel is the Hanita, the spearhead, in critical and indeed in pivotal respects, of western civilization and some of its most important foundations (western civ., in the broadest sense of the term).
Hanita?
Look it up, c. 1939.
