Fancy editing of photographs isn't new. What's amazing is the availability... things that used to be almost impossible, and then were possible with a giant photo laboratory, can now be done at home after dinner.
I was horrified, a few years ago, to see an ad for digital photo manipulation in a magazine. As I recall, it showed a Christmas card photo with Junior, home visiting from college, in full Goth regalia... and the ad showed how you could substitute in his picture from last year so that Grandma wouldn't have a heart attack. In other words, "Buy our product, because we'll help you lie even more effectively!"
Soon cameras will no doubt have digital checksums embedded in the photos, to prove that they haven't been doctored. And the next day, some clever person will sell cameras with PhotoShop capabilities built right in.
It's not enough that we don't trust the reporting of facts by the media anymore, but now we are not going to believe our eyes.
Kinda knocks the wind out of the sails of "Who are you going to believe—me or your lying eyes?"
