Where Jews and their friends will gather, their enemies will follow. This past Sunday there was a commemoration for Holocaust Memorial Day in downtown Boston. The Boston Globe story is here: Holocaust lessons stated anew - Services emphasize preserving memory. A reader who was there writes:
It was a sort of something for everyone program- -- kids singing, survivors and their families, an essay contest, shofar blowing, candle lighting, various speeches. An Israeli MK was there-- -- an impressive guy who had gotten arrested in Eastern Europe for teaching Hebrew before moving to Israel and becoming a politician there. There were six IDF soldiers including a few women and an Ethiopian Jew. The Globe article, interestingly enough, did not mention in this contingent. Stephan Ross, a survivor, was wearing his concentration camp cap and sang a Yiddish partisan song from the war at the end. You could tell the song had given him a lot of strength and it was pretty moving when he sang it...
...There were three protesters, who I think came off as pretty crazy. They were yelling "Zionist Jews and Americans are murderers....stop the Holocaust in Palestine." The Globe only mentioned the last part. Who protests people mourning their dead??? If you look at the picture, one guy has a lot of extra signs. I'll bet hardly anyone had the stomach to protest a Holocaust memorial.
Who indeed? And that's what we're here to expose. There's quite a back story, and it's a tale of familiar names and the usual suspects. Hang on to your Prozac. This is gonna get ugly.
Let us begin at the beginning, with an email sent by well-known local gadfly, David Rolde (link goes to a search in the archives here), that appeared on several local "anti-Israel" email lists, inviting people to come protest the Holocaust commemoration event. I apologize in advance for the lengthy quotes that follow, but there are a lot of interesting layers here, and psychosis is not susceptible to short analysis. Fear not, dear readers, this is an electronic communication and there is no chance of infection:

The "Israeli" government and Zionist groups are having a holocaust commemoration at Faneuil Hall at 10AM this Sunday morning. "Israeli" Minister of Diaspora Affairs Yuli Edelstein, Consul General Nadav Tamir (the official representative of the "Israeli government" in "New England"), Consul General of Germany Friedrich Lohr, and other speakers will be using events that happened in the middle of the last century in Europe to attempt to justify 62 years of Jewish-supremacist colonial rule of Palestine and to attempt to justify the continuing Zionist-perpetrated genocide against the Palestinian people.
The fact that the Zionist regime has a cabinet department and minister of "disapora affairs" is open confirmation of the Zionist Entity's colonial nature. They have a government minister in charge of potential colonists all over the world. The Zionist Entity has no legitimate geographical territory. Its nationals, the Jews, are an ethno-religiously defined international privileged caste who mainly originate in Europe and who illegitimately colonize stolen land in Palestine. Yuli Edelstein, the minister of diaspora affairs, is a Russian-Ukrainian man who, in the 1980s, participated in Zionist- imperialist plots against the USSR (to overthrow the USSR's people's government, split apart the Soviet Union, and leave Eastern Europe ready to be conquered and plundered by international imperialist capitalists). The Soviet government correctly jailed Edelstein. When Edelstein was released he left the Soviet Union, moved to Palestine as a colonist, and eventually rose or was promoted to his current position in the Zionist regime.
65 years after the end of World War 2, Germany is still occupied by tens of thousands of U.S. troops. The German government is a U.S./ Zionist-controlled puppet regime. There is no free speech in Germany; people who disagree with the victors' official history of World War 2 are imprisoned. Germany has been forced to pay billions of dollars of "reparations" to the Zionist entity to fund genocide against Palestinians. The German puppet regime supported and participated in US/NATO-imperialist invasions of Yugoslavia and Afghanistan. This is the context in which Friedrich Lohr, the German puppet-regime's representative in Boston, will be grovelling to the Zionists at this "commemoration" at Faneuil Hall.

Dig the suggested sign slogans. Marvel at what can only be seen as the blatant anti-Semitism to all but the most confused. Let's face it, we do a lot of philosophizing over what is and what isn't simple Jew hatred. You either see it here pretty plainly for once or you are very very deep into the insanity.
Let's take a look at a couple of the reactions to the note. First we encounter old friend Marty Federman, former leader of Jewish Voice for Peace, he was at last report a co-chair of the "splitter" group, American Jews for a Just Peace. He immediately recognizes that Rolde is being a bit too candid for appearances' sake:
I'm very concerned about the fact that e-mails like this are going out on the MECC list without comment. Last year it was agreed that MECC postings would carry a disclaimer noting that announcements were not necessarily sponsored, supported or endorsed by the Coalition.
Specifically, this posting by David is arguably inaccurate, certainly problematic and strategically self-defeating. My general concern is that, while the text of the posting begins by calling for a "Protest against "Israeli government" officials speaking at the Holocaust Commemoration," the subject of the post is a "Protest Against 'Israeli government' - sponsored Holocaust Commemoration," i.e., a protest against the commemoration not just specific speakers. I agree that some of the speakers at this year's commemoration [as in the past] are unsavory individuals - and there is little doubt that many supporters of Israeli policy use the Holocaust in despicable ways vis-a-vis the current situation. That does not change the reality that framing the action as a protest against a Holocaust commemoration is both offensive and tactically counter-productive.
Somewhat more specifically, I have to say that, beyond the naive adoration of entities like the Soviet Union, some very dubious history and a lot of third-rate ideological rant [e.g., US "occupation" of Germany and "puppet" regimes], there is a very uncomfortable tinge in the e-mail's rhetoric. As anyone who knows my positions on the Palestine/Israel situation knows, I do not believe that criticism of Israel's policies or its illegal actions is inherently anti-Semitic. And heaven knows, many Israeli leaders as well as many in the institutional Jewish community in the U.S. have tried to conflate Israel with "Jews" and "Judaism" in order to marshal support for their agenda. Never the less, when David, referring to the "Zionist entity" says "Its nationals, the Jews, are an ethno-religiously defined international privileged caste who mainly originate in Europe and who illegitimately colonize stolen land in Palestine," beyond the factual inaccuracy [a major part of the Israeli population, which includes some of the most rabid 'right-wingers" are Sephardim, coming from the Middle East and North Africa] he is butting up to, even crossing a line which, if it is not blatantly anti-Semitic sounds uncomfortably close and certainly hands our opposition a huge target with which to tar us all as anti-Semites.
Having said all of this [and this is the point of my response to the e-mail], David certainly has a right to his opinions and, whether or not I think he is hurting our cause with actions like this, he has the right to call them. However, our effectiveness on behalf of Palestinians, against the occupation and against Israeli illegalities and human rights violations is seriously compromised and undermined when our enemies are able to attach destructive strategies and opinions to groups and organizations that we support. I realize that MECC is no longer an active coalition, but its list has survived the coalition and much of its work has been subsumed by groups like the recently formed UJP Palestine Task Force. We should not, even by implication, be connected to offensive and/or tactically indefensible positions. The MECC list [and any other broad-based groups/lists] should consider not being the conduit of announcements like this or, at the very least, make sure that they prominently include the disclaimer we agreed on last year.

Speaking of which, Kathy Felgran (above), is hooking up with the SDP people to start a new "human rights" group to try to get a new anti-Israel question on some Massachusetts ballots. Stay tuned for that one as it comes up.
Some of you with longer memories may recognize Bowes as the, at the time, pseudonymously labeled "Old Man Punch 'n Kick" that attacked Hillel Stavis at a Celebrate Israel event two years ago: Many Happy Returns! -- New England Celebrates Israel. Bowes tried punching and kicking Stavis while Cutler poked him with his Palestinian flag, so there is a history of violence and disruptive behavior here.

I am glad that Marty (and hopefully other well-meaning people) and starting to see that all is not well with the anti-Israel movement.
I'm actually beginning to wonder how much of this links back to WWII era Nazism? A lot of Nazis moved to the Middle East and so much of the anti-Jewish propaganda there is distinctly Nazi-esque but the other giveaways are the comments about Germany, plus the constant Holocaust denial and revisionism that is a distressing aspect and a growing aspect of the "proPalestinian" movement.
People are blaming so much of the anti-Israel movement on the Left and in some cases that's obviously correct especially in terms of pro-Palestinian movements - ie, saving the oppressed etc.
But, there are other and obviously far more malevolent factors involved and I'll bet they can be traced straight back to the Nazi movement.
Look at some of the "anti-Zionist" art out there for starters, as well as even the music and the salutes and the flags of several Middle Eastern anti-Israel militias and political parties.
But also, if people were truly determined to rid the world of Jews, which the Nazis obviously were and are, what better place to target than Israel?
