John Lemon has some interesting musings on why so many academics are "people of the left." The first installment concerns academics' business experience - or lack thereof.

[...]Ironically, and as a side note, I think that many scholars tend to think of themselves as more open-minded than business executives who are "narrowly focussed" on profit maximization. However, as I've noted before, the real situation might be reversed. If a business exec is not open to finding new solutions to problems that arise, he or she will go out of business. Academics, on the other hand, often develop their view of the world early on in their career and any admission that they are wrong is seen as a repudiation of their entire life's work. Getting an academic to admit they are wrong is the proverbial equivalent of getting a camel through the eye of a needle, whereas admitting one is wrong is vital to the survival of a business enterprise.[...]

Interesting observation. Sounds about right to me.
