My only reaction is that this is a man who can make even the best cause sound bad. Doesn't he have anyone prepping him?
His inarticulateness is a real shame for those of us who basically support the man and his policies and do NOT want to see a John Kerry elected in his place. He seems sincere, but his inability to articulate and defend his positions clearly is a terrifically heavy liability.
I missed it but judging from W's past appearances particularly the last brief Press Conference he gave at the White House lawn he's horrible. He can't think on his feet and present cogent passionate arguments like Jack Straw or Tony Blair. The Davos account by Nordlinger at National Review is a great example of Straw mowing down the voracious press. My friend, whose not a W fan, was in Brazil at the time of his White House lawn brief press conference and he says that people around the world see that and it does more to hurt the image of the United States than anything.
And he's going to have to answer questions well at some point because as his team senses that the tide is turning in public opinion recently due to the Primaries campaign and public events and policy.
What's the guy going to do? He's going to have to be able to answer these questions cogently at some point?
That's a great article. I wish Bush could have hired Straw to stand in for him. Really, good thing I spent the day doing tech stuff with the site, or I would have been dwelling on this miserable performance and missed opportunity.
I kept watching the interview and putting myself in the place of someone who doesn't like Bush - that is, me pre-9/11 - and I couldn't help but think, "Ugg...how the hell did this guy get to be our President? God truly hates us." I'm sorry! And no one get upset, like I said, I like the guy. The issues involved are too important to be flubbed by inarticulate leadership. I can't describe how disheartening it was.
You should read the rest of the Davos Series as well by Nordlinger. They're all really interesting easy reading. Its a 5 part series I believe.
The part on Straw was really amusing and interesting though. However, he gives interesting asides on many famous leaders and people at the forum in Switzerland.
