When I started this site I didn't even know what a blog was. I just wanted a place to be able to shout a few frustrations to the world and maybe practice my writing from time to time. I also wasn't sure I'd keep on doing even that forever, and I wanted a web site that I could use for whatever I felt like - practicing web design, posting pictures, hobbies, etc...
So when thinking of a URL, I wasn't thinking of it with "Blog Marketing" in mind. (Geek alert ahead!) The history of the word "Solomonia" is fairly simple. When I computer game(not very often recently), I often game under the name "Solomon." Particularly when I play games like Civilization, I use that name, and what would Solomon's capital city be? Right, "Solomonia." Not a bad url, although I've since found out it's also the name of an Orthodox Christian Saint, not that that's really here nor there.
Recently I've been thinking that, well, the name is kinda lame, and I might change it. For instance, some possibilities are "Tough to Figure," or my favorite of the moment, "Tevye's Burden" - both URLs I've locked up already. Much as I am hesitant to change anything, thinking of what little bit of notoriety this place has gotten and the links I'll have to ask people to change, maybe it's worth it.
Or maybe not...I dunno. Maybe I'm being silly, and yes, I know, "it's the content, stupid," but an appealing name might not be that bad, either. Or maybe "Solomonia" is just fine. Or maybe I just need a nap...
Anyway, if anyone has an opinion, you know what to do.
Continuity, I'd say - but it's not my blog.
How about "Vandals at the Gate" for a blog name to kick around? ;)
I would say stick with Solomonia, but if you do decide to change, I'll have my "edit blogroll" button ready.
Have you gotten any negative reactions because of the saint name thing?
I wonder if she's a well known saint; is she a St. Francis of Assisi or more like a St. Anthusa the Younger. (No offense to St. Anthusa the Younger)
No negative reactions on the name, but once in a while I wonder what impression people get when they read "Solomonia" (a female saint). Not a big deal - doubt anyone's ever heard of her, anyway.
Norm, no worry at all, I'm asking for opinions, after all!
Soy, that's actually a pretty good one. ;)
I went through three short-lived blogs before settling on Ghost of a flea. Continuity is good but then Andrea Harris seems to enjoy remaking herself every so often and people keep reading her work.
One thought, they say a name that is closer to the beginning of the alphabet does better due to being closer to the top of blogrolls. I have wondered if that was true...
Sol,
FWIW, I love the name. It's unique and it's easy to remember. But I don't think continuity would be such a problem if you decide to change it. If you post, we will come. And link. As for blogrolls, a lot of 'em aren't alphabetical anyway. And I can think of at least one blog that begins with a "Y" that does reasonably well. ;-)
Heheh, true, although it wouldn't surprise me if alphabetical placement had some effect.
Lynn makes me think that perhaps I also should have asked what people think of the current name. I take it there isn't much opinion on that either way, though.
Well, i named my blog after my ebay handle which I started to name after my corporation wide blue seas, llc but it was taken so I said how dare they take my wide blue seas???? it stuck...
