Atlas has a live report from Ehud Olmert's speech before Congress today. I am green that she was invited! Go read. I'd love to know who the sour-pusses were, too.
Paul Mirengoff of PowerLine was there too, and offers a brief report, here.
I was briefly watching CNN International this morning. They reported on the speech after mentioning how Olmert is -
"Following the outline of Ariel Sharon. Setting the bar high for the Palestinians and then acting unilaterally when they fail to meet it."
He and the chick with the British accent repeated this line several times.
Then also mentioned that Congress passed a bill that was even stronger than what the President wanted even denying $ to NGO's.
Then carefully stating that this was due to "no doubt personal feelings as well as political expediency as Congress is heading towards elections"
I was waiting for them to say "Kiss up/kowtow to their powerful Jewish lobby masters."
They then interviewed the speaker of the PLO, a Hamas dude I think, who blathered on and on how unilateral moves will never be accepted by the Palestinians and how they will incite violence in the region and (get this!) "go against the Roadmap".
To be honest with you. I don't care what prepared speech Olmert gave. It's all bullshit.
1) Israel should only be evacuating the few far flung northern Samaria settlements that Sharon talked about and then getting the fence completed.
2) Olmert claims he is carrying out Sharon's vision etc... that's bullshit he's carrying out Meretz's and his wife's "vision" with some conservative adjustements. Arresting and taking out Jihadist murderous heads, finishing the fence, "possibly" populating the area between Mael Edumin."
3) Forcing out Jews from the West Bank, judenreining it, is the biggest possible irreversible mistake Israel can make. It will only further empower Hamas and the radical elements, radicalize the West Bank similar results in Gaza now, gain Israel NOTHING in the International arena, (PLO speaker even mentioned how "unilateral moves go against the Roadmap, as if they give a shit about anything on the Roadmap or followed 1 iota of it)
How about simply taking off the fundamentalist nazi brainwashing and jihadist hate from the television and elementary schools. TV that the PLO not Hamas has and does today control.
Mike and Sol;
I played the clip, and I don't know if this was for real or not. I find it hard to believe that 'Dean' was a real caller. Not sure about California, but it would be difficult for anyone in Iowa to be that far removed from reality and survive to adulthood. I think it was the crying part that tends to make me believe it was a put on. If he is for real, must be a grad of U of C Berkeley.
Last night I watched a BBC news report on Ehud Olmert's speech. The reporter was biased in a subtle way, I think. First, he said that Bush probably commanded Olmert to say that he'd be willing to deal directly with Abbas. I thought that this was Olmert's idea and that Bush supported it. Am I wrong?
The reporter also said that the violent division within the Palestinian camp is between the PLO, which accepts the two-state solution, and Hamas, which wants a state for the Palestinians "in all of historic Palestine." I'm not sure that this isn't just glossing off the surface. Has the PLO really accepted the two-state solution? Or is that just rhetoric to please the West and play for time? That's up for debate.
It's amazing, within about 60 seconds of reporting, this BBC reporter managed to make two blunders. Or am I wrong?

Yeesh. Real high bar...don't launch rockets, blow people up, say you recognize us, negotiate in good faith...

Heh, no. That caller was a put-on...right? I mean, I'm assuming.

I don't know. The crying part and the ending (where he says "it's been done before) makes me think it may have been a put on. I'd like to know myself.
The PLO never ammended their charter and daily in elementary schools and tv rejects Israel's existence.
They control both not Hamas still.
