Also via Mick, what's a little genocide so long as it's not Jews and Westerners committing it?

The Chinese government is forcibly relocating Tibetan herders to urban areas and farmland, destroying their livelihoods and way of life, and denying them access to justice for violations of their rights, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.

Since 2000, the Chinese government’s campaign to move Tibetan herders to urban areas has put traditional lifestyles and livelihoods at risk for the approximately 700,000 people who have been resettled in western China. Many herders have been required to slaughter their livestock and move into newly built housing colonies without consultation or compensation...

...“Some Chinese authorities claim that their forced urbanization of Tibetan herders is an enlightened form of modernization,” said Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “But those same authorities didn’t bother to find out what Tibetans want, and have been heavy handed with those who have complained.”...

I believe the UN is compelled to stop this sort of thing. Yeah, right.

Your introductory sentence is unfortunately phrased, Solomon. I'm unaware of Jews having committed genocide. Were you thinking of the myth of Jenin or the Sabra and Shatila massacre which was carried out by Lebanese militias?

I'm referring to accusations, rather than the real thing (as in this case), of course. You're right, I could have been clearer.

No, no, Solomon, your first sentence WAS correctly worded! Just ask the U.N. and any Arab. ONLY Jews/Israelis can and do commit genocide.

:-(

The answer is, of course, for every progressive to stick on another "Free Tibet" sticker.

How will this free Tibet?

Well, it'll raise consciousness. And yeah, they'll all down around the same table and sing "Kumbyiah". That'll do it!

Al Capp, thou should'st be living at this hour!

Yet Tiger Woods will be playing golf in China, Formula One racing will be held in China, the Olympics of course, so yea, what's a little repression and genocide when money's to be had and can all be forwarded under the banner of "public diplomacy"?

At what point mere moralistic naysaying becomes a factor, I'm not sure, I simply doubt the Tibet situation (even the "forced urbanization" is a notably contemptible exercise in cultural dissolution, not to mention the murder for the sake of "cultural advance") warrants the label of overly much moralistic pretense.

(Though I admit to being both a Tiger and an F1 fan - mea culpa.)

Hey, what about the Left's much vaunted respect for third world cultures? Oh, right, sorry, forgot about that. Offer only good if said culture is trying to slit your throat.

I have to admit to having a Free Tibet sign on my blog. Tibet is one of those that the left sort of dodder on. Some are displeased that we do business with the Chinese and then there are others who admire China for their retaining their communism.
