Michael J. Totten: Where the Middle East Fights Its Wars - '...Syria is benefiting from stabilization but without any political return. Syria has the mentality of a hostage taker. They took Palestinians hostages, they took Hezbollah hostages, they took Lebanon hostage. The international community tells Syria "Leave Lebanese alone, please. Let them live." And they say "Okay, I’ll leave Lebanon alone for a while. Pay me some money." So this is a negative achievement, actually. There’s no positive achievement with Syria. It should be transformed. We’ll try to engage Hezbollah here internally. But we are talking about a timetable of twelve months to a year and a half. All the intelligence coming from Iran says that by 2010 they might have the bomb.'
